15 top Ann moments spanning her 15 years on TODAY

Slideshow: Ann Curry’s distinguished career at TODAY

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

    Happy Ann-iversary!

Ann Curry will mark 15 years with TODAY on Sunday — serving as an anchor for one-fourth of the broadcast's lifespan.

15 of Ann's remarkable moments are listed below in no particular order. Check them out and then vote at the bottom on your favorite.

And then leave a comment congratulating her below!

    1) Joining TODAY as news anchor
She had "huge shoes to fill," joked Matt when Ann took over his news desk spot on March 11, 1997.

And fill them she did — for more than 14 years, traveling all across the globe to bring viewers closer to the world we live in.

    2) Discovering her Japanese roots
Ann journeyed to her mother's remote Japanese village as part of a TODAY series where anchors traced their roots.

It was bittersweet, as Ann saw relatives for the first time since both her parents passed away. "I'm so grateful to see my family," she told her cousins.

"How proud and pleased your parents would be right now having seen what you did," Matt said. Ann teared up: "I wanted to honor them."

    3) Getting a trim for a good cause
Talk about a good hair day! Ann donated more than 10 inches of her mane to Locks of Love in 2006 after her daughter McKenzie encouraged her to get an on-air shear.

TODAY turned the plaza into what Matt called a "high-end salon" — with Katie Couric as a gleeful barber. And with only a few chops, Katie held a year's worth of Ann's hair as a trophy.

Ann was not the only one to go under the scissors. She inspired other plaza-goers to chop their mops as well for the good cause.

    4) Broadcasting live from the South Pole
Ann was dispatched to Antarctica in 2007 as part of TODAY's Ends of the Earth series. Drama mounted for days as weather problems delayed Ann and the crew from reaching the South Pole.

    She finally made it.

"Just a few moments ago we touched down at the South Pole," Ann proclaimed live via satellite phone in negative 53 degree Fahrenheit temperatures (not counting the wind chill)!

It was the first-ever live network broadcast from the earth's southernmost point, where only about 7,000 people had ever visited. Once there, she proudly marked NBC News' territory on the ceremonial pole!

    5) Performing stand-up comedy
Ann doesn't scare easily; she's traveled through war zones, jumped out of a plane and admitted to millions that she hadn't showered for nine days.

But in 2007 she revealed the one thing that terrifies her: Telling jokes. After a dare from Meredith, Ann faced her fear and enrolled in comedy school, which required her to perform a stand-up routine in front of hundreds of people.

    6) Finding woman missing in tsunami
“My sister ... is missing,” one of Ann's Twitter followers wrote to her after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. “I will do my best,” Ann tweeted back from the devastated region.

Armed with a photograph of the missing teacher and moved by the family's plea, Ann spent hours searching evacuation centers.

And then, good news came. She found the woman and helped reunite her over the phone with her family.

Ann's presence on Twitter also helped get much-needed aid and medical attention to people in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Twitter named that message the most powerful tweet of 2010.

    7) Going one-on-one with Ahmadinejad
Ann has traveled twice to Iran — a nation hostile to most foreign journalists — for an exclusive interview with president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In 2009, the leader defended his violently contested re-election; in the 2011 video below, he revealed the news that the imprisoned American hikers would be released “in a couple of days.”

    8) Carrying the Olympic torch
Ann ran through the streets of New York City with the Olympic torch as part of the iconic relay before the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Games.

But moments before her run, she admitted she was a bit nervous: "What if I drop it?" she said. "What if the flame goes out?" Turns out there was a close call during the jog: She almost tripped over a manhole cover.

Everything turned out fine, and Ann created an unforgettable memory. "Holding this torch and running with it is such an honor," she said.

Ann later raised more than $3,000 for the Salvation Army by auctioning the torch off to the highest bidder.

    9) Dazzling on the catwalk
Work it, Ann! Donning a red gown, our anchor strutted her stuff on the catwalk for a show that helped raise awareness for women and heart disease.

It's not the only time she's been heralded for her style. People magazine named her as "chic at any age" in 2011, and viewers often clamor to get her look.

    10) Spotlighting African struggles
Ann has traveled the world to report on dire situations.

In April 2006, Ann interviewed Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and their two adopted children in Namibia. The star couple was there to raise money for education in poor nations.

She has also reported extensively from Darfur, Sudan, once joining George Clooney on a trek through the country as the actor worked to raise awareness of the conflict there.

    11) Climbing Kilimanjaro
As part of TODAY's second Ends of the Earth adventure in 2008, Ann climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

It was a difficult trek. Because of all the equipment the team needed, more than 100 porters were recruited to assist with the ascent up the most difficult route to the summit.

The team was successful in documenting climate change's effects on the glacier, but turned back from the 19,000-foot peak due to altitude sickness.

“We haven’t had a shower in nine days,” Ann told the anchors in Studio 1A. “It’s getting kind of ripe.”

    12) Blushing after Elmo confesses his 'love'
Elmo totally crushes on Ann Curry! The red "Sesame Street" star even wrote a poem for her:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Elmo loves the TODAY Show and Miss Ann Curry too,” Elmo said.

He also surprised Ann on her 10th anniversary with a song while looking back at their fond moments together.

The feeling must be mutual, as Ann's always a bit speechless around the crimson Muppet. “The only time I saw Ann kind of flummoxed was when she was with Elmo,” Al said.

    13) Interviewing the Dalai Lama
Ann met the Dalai Lama outside Studio 1A for his first live morning news show interview in 2010.

The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet said that human beings are becoming more compassionate and have the ability to overcome the world’s problems.

She spoke with him again in 2011 about the importance of spreading his message via social networks and China needing to come to terms with democracy.

    14) Jumping off of a bridge for charity
Is there anything Ann won't do for a good cause?

She bungee jumped 120 feet off of a bridge live on TODAY after viewers raised $10,000 for charity.

“If you’re going to do something as crazy and stupid as that, you want to feel it was worth it," she said. "I wanted some good to come out of it, and I think it did.”

She also inspired the awe of Tom Hanks, who watched from Studio 1A before his interview.

“I can’t follow that. I’ve done nothing,” Hanks said. “She is Superwoman as far as I’m concerned! I’m just some goofy actor who pretends to do things. Ann is actually doing it.”

    15) Assuming the TODAY co-anchor position
“I’m Ann Curry and I’m in for, I guess, nobody this morning — me, myself and I.”

That’s how Ann started her first day as co-anchor on June 9, 2011 after 14 years at the news desk.

"It’s such a thrill,” Ann said. “I really feel like Cinderella — Ann Curry, aka Cinderella today."

What's your favorite Ann moment? Her ...

Hoda gets 'Low, Low, Low' with Flo Rida

    By Danielle Brennan, TODAY.com producer

Thursday night, TODAY senior producers, staff and anchors attended a fun and festive party celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary.

As the lights went low and the music (of Flo Rida and Pitbull) began, Hoda Kotb busted out some serious moves.

Fans of iHoda's playlist know the fourth hour co-host loves to shimmy her shoulders, sing and dance. But who knew she could get down quite like this?

Check out these snaps of Hoda, breaking it down on the dance floor with Flo Rida.

The making of TODAY's 60th birthday cake

    TODAY

    TODAY's 60th anniversary cake.

    By Katie Quinn

"This has not been a one-person job," said TODAY's Director of Culinary Production, Bianca Henry, about putting together the 6-tiered, 4-foot-high cake that greeted TODAY anchors past and present on the 60th anniversary show.

Bianca, the executive pastry chef for the project, was freed up by helpers Lish Steiling and Alli Simpson, who took on the show's regular food segments for two days so Bianca could get started.

Bianca Henry, Lish Steiling and Alli Simpson apply fondant to the 60th anniversary cake.

Each tier of this enormous dessert is a different flavor (Bianca picked her 6 favorite): chocolate, vanilla, Creamsicle, almond mocha, carrot and lemon raspberry. Around 60 pounds of butter, 50 pounds of flour, 70 pounds of sugar, 11 pounds of chocolate and 8 quarts of cream went into it.

    Katie Quinn / TODAY.com

Bianca Henry works on TODAY's 60th anniversary cake.

She started brainstorming the design two weeks ago and found aesthetic inspiration from TODAY's original 1952 logo.

Bianca Henry shows an image of the TODAY's 60th anniversary cake.

"At first we weren't sure if we'd do the cake in-house" or hire an outside company, said Bianca. In true form, TODAY's hard-working food maven decided to do it from start to finish.

Food stylist Lish Steiling trims the fondant on TODAY's 60th anniversary cake.

When TODAY.com caught up with these queens of batter and baking, they were in the midst of applying the fondant (a sugar paste) and diamond sparkle powder to the bottom tier. It was clear they made the right choice to do it themselves: Bianca, a trained pastry chef, was in her element and the cake was shaping up to be a big success.

Rainbow bright: Ann wears a special TODAY anniversary dress

    TODAY

Natalie, Al, Ann and Matt and team celebrate 60 years of TODAY.

    By Rina Raphael

The plaza isn't the only thing dressed up for TODAY's 60th anniversary: even the talent's wardrobe got a birthday makeover! Ann wore a bright, TODAY-themed rainbow dress — custom-designed by Lisa Perry — to help ring in the festivities in style. (When it comes to celebrating, we're certainly not subtle.)

    TODAY

Ann gets in the spirit with a special TODAY-themed dress.

Ann follows a long TODAY tradition of appreciating fashion. As we celebrate this landmark TV event, take a look back to the style of yore. Check out this great video from  Aug. 29, 1956, in which TODAY’s Helen O’Connell shows Dave Garroway which silhouettes for women, from two of America’s top fashion houses, were going to be popular that fall.

Ironically tonight is the fiftieth anniversary of the death of video visionary Ernie Kovacs. TODAY marks 60th with an anchor homecoming

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

With a ceremony fitting a diamond anniversary, TODAY toasted six decades on the air with an anchor homecoming that brought current and former hosts together.

After 60 years, at least two things haven't changed at TODAY: We're still live from Rockefeller Center and aiming to uphold the vision of our first anchor Dave Garroway, who wanted to "put you more closely in touch with the world we live in."

"Essentially, the program has remained the same. And that is you get up to find out if the world is still there. Is everything OK?" Barbara Walters said. "We're the people you trust."

TODAY nodded to our history by staging a scene straight out of 1952 on New York City's 49th street. The screen went black and white as a stand-in Dave Garroway broadcast from the "Window of the World." Staffers dressed in period costume looked on, and from the crowd came Matt Lauer to introduce the big reunion.

The Look: Rainbow bright: Ann wears a TODAY anniversary dress

Hugh Downs, Barbara Walters, Jim Hartz, Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Bryant Gumbel, Willard Scott, Deborah Norville, Katie Couric, Meredith Vieira, Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, all gathered in Studio 1A to share their stories.

Several former TODAY Girls also joined the broadcast, including Florence Henderson, Estelle Parsons, Lee Meriwether, Robbin Bain Gaudieri and Beryl Pfizer. And in another memorable moment, the TODAY news readers reunited at the news desk.

"We have more anchors than the Sixth Fleet!" Ann Curry joked. "Boy, after the week we've had celebrating, I feel like 60," said 54-year-old Matt Lauer.

Matt, Ann and the whole crew also wished other living co-anchors Gene Shalit and Joe Garagiola well, saying they were both sorely missed at the festivities.

During an interview with all of the past anchors, they recalled witnessing more than half a century's most important and influential news events.

Katie remembered her reports from the Columbine shooting, while Meredith talked about covering the attack at Virginia Tech.

allDAY: 6 iconic TODAY moments for our 60th anniversary

"We had been to a candle-light vigil during the evening, and one of the students came up to me and he said to me, 'Can I just get a hug?'" Meredith said. "This show was sort of a surrogate mom to him. We were his family."

The moment turned more reflective as the past anchors recounted their time on the broadcast.

"The genius of Pat Weaver when he first started this is still true today," Brokaw said. "It is the electronic breakfast table. It is the great national morning newspaper."

Matt asked each to name the broadcast icon they watched before joining the show. And several named Garroway as their inspiration.

"I admired that his approach was so easy going and so ad-libbed, literally. It was so new then," Hugh Downs said. "Garroway was a model."

Watch the full round table in video below:

Tom Hanks, who has been a guest on the show 22 times, wheeled out a giant cake for the champagne toast.

"The only reason I pushed out the cake was that the trainer didn't have enough time with J. Fred Muggs," Tom joked about our former chimpanzee anchor.

The first family, national landmarks and celebrities also toasted the show's celebration.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama saluted the broadcast in a special message.

"Over decades and across generations, the TODAY show has become a part of American culture," said the president. "We know you'll have many more years of success," Michelle added.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed January 13 "TODAY Show Day." "This show I think sets the standards for a lot of other television," he said. "And you should be very proud and all of the people that have worked here over the years."

The Empire State Building lights up in TODAY colors.

National landmarks across the U.S. marked the occasion Thursday night and Friday morning. The Empire State Building lit up in red, yellow and orange — the first time it has ever been illuminated for a television show — while Niagara Falls glowed with TODAY hues.

A New York Fire Department fireboat spouted orange-colored water in front of the Statue of Liberty, the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas and the Cira Centre in Philadelphia saluted TODAY, and the Goodyear Blimp congratulated the show with a special message while flying over the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles.

NBC stations nationwide celebrating TODAY at 60

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

TODAY is joined every morning by your local broadcasters who deliver updates on news and weather from your area.

Many of these stations this week are celebrating TODAY's 60th anniversary, highlighting their own involvement in the show's success.

Providence, R.I.'s NBC 10 took a look at how Sunrise and TODAY have worked together over the last 60 years. Their anchor Frank Coletta reminisced about giving Katie Couric a live lobster as a gift on the air!

Colorado's 9News also is celebrating their 60th anniversary (congrats, team!). They looked back at their own humble beginnings here.

And Tampa's WFLA chatted with the TODAY anchors about the history of TODAY, providing for some fun behind-the-scenes moments. Click here for the interviews with Matt, Ann and Al.

Later tonight, stations in New York, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and more will be showcasing TODAY's celebration as landmarks in their cities are lighting up in TODAY colors.

Show us how you're celebrating by tweeting @TODAYshow pictures and using the hashtag, #TODAYat60.

The first time I watched TODAY: When Hugh Downs interviewed my dad

    By Susan Houriet, TODAY.com, TODAY.com

In 1971, my family lived in a cabin in northern Vermont with no running water and no electricity. So when my dad, author Robert Houriet, was slated to appear on the TODAY show to promote his new book, arrangements had to be made.

Aug. 21, 1971: Author Robert Houriet speaks with TODAY's Hugh Downs about what he learned about communal living while writing "Getting Back Together."

Just after dawn on a late August morning, my mom loaded me, then 7, and my 2½-year-old brother David into our dark blue Opel sedan to make the 5-mile drive to a room at the Border Motel in Derby that had been rented for the occasion. My father had taken the bus to New York City a few days before.

We had no idea what time his segment would air. “We got there early and we watched quite a bit of television, which we were not used to,” my mom said when I asked about her memories of that day. “David was running around. I was very nervous for Robert. I was more nervous than I was thrilled. I had never seen the TODAY show before. We didn't have TV. We really were leading a homesteading life.”

    Lucy Horton

TODAY.com's Susan Houriet and her dad, author Robert Houriet, in 1973, on the Vermont commune Susan's parents founded. Robert Houriet discussed his book about communes on the TODAY show in 1971.

Ever since I first started working at TODAY.com five years ago I have thought about that interview and how I would like to see it again and be able to share it with my family and friends — and my dad. I even got the phone number for NBC’s archives, but was always too busy to call. But the 60th anniversary celebration inspired me, and with the help of the amazing archive staff (how cool is it that 40-year-old footage on tape looks this good?) and TODAY.com video producer Emily Christensen-Flowers, my dad’s TODAY show debut is now online for the world to see in all its digitized glory.

Yesterday afternoon I watched it for the first time, surrounded by my colleagues. What struck us most, aside from the fact that my dad looked a bit like a preacher or a serial killer (sorry, Dad!) was how long and meaty the segment was at a full 8 minutes (and how Hugh Downs used air quotes when he uttered the word "hippies.") My father, a former newspaper editor in New Jersey, had spent the previous year traveling the country, visiting more than 50 of the country's then 2,000 communes to learn about the movement, which he chronicled in his book "Getting Back Together." The interview covered all facets of the cultural phenomenon from group marriage to the romance of ''living off the land."

"I did experience what you would call a spiritual consciousness within myself and the world," my dad told co-host Joe Garagiola. "I learned how to go with it and how to believe in it. It's a rather fundamental faith." That faith would lead him and my mother to found a commune themselves, two years later — Frog Run Farm in East Charleston, Vermont.

Never could I have imagined that, 40 years later, I would be watching the interview again, on a computer, in the TODAY.com newsroom! So this one's for you, Dad, and for anyone else that wants to take a look back at a little bit of history. Watch the clip here.

Check out our TODAY at 60 online experience.

Susan Houriet, supervising producer at TODAY.com, grew up without a television and makes up for it every day by watching four hours of the best morning show in history (and lots of “Downton Abbey.”)

I find this clip pretty surreal for a lot of reasons- I imagine you must as well, and for a lot of the same reasons. Among other things- what is up with Hugh Downs' suit? Did they let network stars dress themselves back then? I guess it was a less litigious age, so they didn't have to worry about la …
