Countdown begins to TODAY's 60th anniversary

TODAY

On Jan. 14, 1952, Dave Garroway welcomed America to TODAY -- and morning television has never been the same. Since then, TODAY has brought its viewers nearly six decades of historical moments.

This morning -- on our 59th birthday -- TODAY kicks off a year-long celebration that'll lead to our 60th-anniversary milestone.

As part of the celebration, we'll reflect on our remarkable history, highlighting special moments, unforgettable segments and newsmaking interviews.  We’ll look at every aspect of the show -- the anchors, the guests, the set, the crowd, the Plaza, and how TODAY has evolved (and in some cases, stayed the same) over the years.

The year will culminate in a star-studded celebration on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, with TODAY anchors past and present, favorite celebrity guests, and special surprises and performances.

In honor of the show's upcoming 60th anniversary, TODAY's anchors past and present look back at how far "America's favorite morning show" has come.

But the most important part of the celebration is YOU – because TODAY has been going for 60 years only because of your loyalty.

Not a favorite memory but why would anybody listen to Oprahs personal trainer. This man in my eyes is a total failure. We can all see how large she has become over the years. He should be embarrassed, and not on television giving anybody else advice

WOW, that last cooking segment DROVE ME CRAZY. Meredith has no right to ever say anything about K.Lee and Hoda talking. Anne (who I adore) and Meredith (same!) NEVER SHUT UP during the whole time. I was trying to get the recipe but more importantly, that poor chef was so embarassed he didn't know what to do, Every time he tried to say something he was interupted and as he was still trying to explain something, Anne screams for everyone else to come in. I never did get the recipe or what he was trying to say because Meredith never heard of popcorn shrimp. Tsk, Tsk, Ladies, you know better then that.

I do miss the newsier tone TODAY used to have. Typically, I don't watch past 7:30 anymore, simply because I don't wish to be assaulted with the endless stream of tabloid stories and puff features that fill the rest of the show's timeslot.

There are still momentary glimpses of the show's enormous capabilities -- the coverage of the London transit bombings in 2005, and the elections of 2006 and 2008 immediately spring to mind. That's when the show soars. I'm only 25, but I can remember when TODAY was still a news-heavy show, in a time (dare I even dream?) before Hoda and Kathie Lee.

And really, would it kill you to bring back the bottom-of-the-hour news updates?

That said, the show has a rich legacy, one worth celebrating. Dave Garroway is my broadcast hero, and it gives me chills to watch the kinescopes and clips from those earliest days of TODAY. I hope the 60th anniversary broadcast devotes a significant portion of its time to an examination of those early days, from the show's groundbreaking hour-long investigation of civil rights issues from 1957, to the Paris and Rome remotes of 1959 and 1960. It'd be shame not to acknowledge those great steps forward.

I still look forward to January 14th every year, because I know that for a moment, the garish set and screaming crowd will take a backseat -- if only for a few seconds -- to the calm, reassuring delivery of one Dave Garroway, sending us off into the new day with the benediction, "Peace."

Happy birthday, TODAY. And many more to follow.

I enjoyed the show so much today...no Merideth...she's just so fake, she really ruined the show for me, loved Katy Couric, no one like her. She was genuine and funny, Merideth tries to be the Katy, and funny, but it just doesn't float with me. GET RID OF HER!!!!!

I would love the book but can't tolerate the new format any longer. Too much fluff and no talent. It has pretty much turned into a cooking fashion show. The Hoda Kathy Lee Today Show.
