Bow to Wow: Four precious pups to melt your heart this winter

Jill Rappaport

By TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport

It's a new year and we have a new resolution for you — ADOPT A PET!

We are back with another installment of our popular series Bow to Wow, where we take shelter pets, give them a makeover, and find them all loving homes.

I am so thrilled to say we still have a 100 percent success record, thanks to all of you who have adopted our wonderful animals, including Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps who took home beautiful Penelope before the holidays.

Sadly the cages are still full at Animal Care and Control in New York City, so we still desperately need your help.

I selected four more amazing dogs this month, from a gorgeous black Lab pup to a Chihuahua mix pup, we have a precious Pomeranian baby, and a tan and white Shiu Tzu mix to melt your heart!

Four more incredible examples of the wonderful, loving pets you can find at your local shelter all waiting to find that perfect, permanent loving home. Find out more about them at Animal Care & Control of New York City.

I want Nala!! How do I get her?

I believe the Pom (Nala) is really a Finnish Spitz. It is awfully large for a 12 week old Pom puppy. If that is the case the dog will be much larger than a Pom . Just my thoughts.

Please apologize to Natalie, she did not blow a secret. The last time you aired the Bow to Wow segment, the Meow to Wow name was dropped on that day. No surprise to me!!

Hi all, I was interested in one of the dogs as well. You would need to email: NY Animal Care & Control of NYC. Hope that helps.

While I applaud Jill's work on behalf of shelter animals, she/ NYACC never advocates for the Pitbulls in the system. They by far constitute the largest number of dogs in need of homes. She could do much for the breed's reputation by showing that they are not usually the "vicious" dogs as portrayed by the media. I myself have gotten two Pitbulls from NYACC's death row. One is now a certified therapy dog and has his canine good citizen certification and the other is my clown and she lives amicably with our collie. Pitbulls, like children, learn what they live. As with any animal, you'll get what you put into it.

Pit Bulls should be put down...period....They are unstable with other animals, and too easily trained to attack people. Look at any meth house...They got a Pit guarding it. The potential for injury to another animal or person is much too great to have these dogs put up for adoption. PUT EM DOWN.

Totally agree Linda. While it isn't a possibility at the moment to own a dog (or 3!), once we are financially stable and I'm out of college I plan on rescuing a pit or two. This breed is in desperate need of owners who understand that the APBT and other pit-like breeds are strong dogs with strong wills and need kind owners with good hearts as well as a good sense of dog behavior. They used to be great family dogs and still can be, but poor breeding and bad owners are rampant right now and it's devastating for a breed that everyone wants for criminal reasons. First it was dobermans, rottweilers and german shepards. I await the day when pit bulls finally get their chance just to be...something else.

No dog should be tied up outside and ignored.

No dog should be taught to fight other dogs, animals or people.

No dog should be left to wander the streets, abandoned.

No dog should be forced to fight against its will, or be beaten or killed when it doesn't.

There are lots of good dogs being left in shelters because people seem so determined to ruin them. They deserve a second chance and we need to fix our wrongs.

And be careful MrLightRail. Your ignorance is showing.

While I do have a bit of trepidation about owning a pit, I know they can be the most loving dogs out there. It's all about the owner. Those meth houses you where using as an example? Well...no offense but Duh. The Pit was trained to protect, it was trained to be mean. Put a dog in a good home and you tend to get a good dog.

I also applaud Jill's work, however I want to see more older dogs then the puppies she brings out. Come on people there are dogs and cats in shelters all over, they shouldn't have to be placed on TV for you to think about adopting them. Try to never buy from stores, they are overpriced and can come from horrible situations. Shelter animals will love you so much for rescuing them and you'll see it all the time.

The Today show should pick another animal shelter to deal with. CACC kills animals. Maybe they should chose a shelter that saves lives, like Pets Alive in Westchester and they also have another sanctuary in Middletown, NY. Pets Alive would be a better choice for the today show to work with.

                        Reply#12 - Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:38 AM EST

Although we do not like to see any kill shelters, the shelters are not the problem, it's the uneducated population of people regarding animals and caring for them. Of course there are instances where people fall on hard times, etc...so I'm simply generally speaking. The animals are the victims and they all need help, whether they're at a kill shelter or not, so why not at least take them OUT of the kill shelter if the show's had an amazing 100% success rate! That's great! Good for the Today Show for doing anything at all for the dogs and cats! All the animals need our help.

I'd much rather they pick a shelter that euthanizes. At least that way they could save some of the animals.

I agree with another comment...is there a way that a show like the Today Show could use their resources to help some of the shelter that still kill....I live in Kansas and found out that our local shelter is still one that will kill after a short period of time...I went to visit and these animals are precious there has to be a way to help save animals from the kill shelters with such great coverage that you can offer

Would love to adopt Charlie the tan and white Shiu Tzu mix. Only potential problem....we live in Iowa. Can we make this work? We currently have a white lab that needs a companion. Our family loves animals and Charlie would have a safe, loving home to come to.

Dahduey, there is a program where long haul truck drivers can and will carry the dog or cat across the country for you not sure of the cost but consider it would be worth checking into.

If everyone that writes in expressing interest in one of these four particular dogs would only look as far as the local shelter in their town to adopt an animal there would be far less animals being euthanized every day. You don't need to adopt a Shih Tzu in New York City when your local county shelter has all breeds of dogs waiting for homes.

Only one thing wrong with puppies. They turn into dogs. Bring them in the house, and they crap and pee on the floor. Put them outside, and they bark and bark. They shed hair all over everything in the house. They chew and scratch stuff up. And you have to bathe them every day or two to keep them from stinking, and to keep them from stinking up everything they lie on. I don't understand why anyone would want to put up with all that.

What kind of freakshow dogs do you have? Oh, wait, me thinks its probably not the dogs who have a problem. I have four rescued dogs...none of whom have ever used my house as a bathroom, none of them are loud, none of them smell bad. They don't chew on things other than their toys. Yep, the do shed...hence my love of this nifty invention called the VACUUM CLEANER.

For everyone interested in the dogs featured on the show...that's great but remember there are THOUSANDS of dogs and cats languishing in shelters all over the place. You can find a great dog anywhere, use the emotions stirred up by the TV pups to go help one in a shelter near you!

Michael1601 ,you have obviously never had the love of a dog.If one was ever to past the walls you have up you would understand.I have 2 Chow Chows(let me guess you think they are vicious animals too).My day is always improved just by them simply being there, they play with my grandkids,my spouse and myself.Until you have been chosen by a dog you will never know the real meaning of TRUE LOVE.

Then you're not training your dogs correctly. I have rescued two dachshunds, a mini and a standard. Yes they are social dogs, they like to bark, but I correct them, they do not shed, they do not mess in the house, they are crated when i am gone and my home does not smell. They are my companions, not my "babies", and we enjoy each others company very much. Get some knowledge about the different breeds before you post.

There are more than enough dogs for adoption. Does it really have to be a 'featured' pup? The others are just as cute. People pay major money for 'mixes' when you can get the same thing for peanuts at the shelter. People just amaze me.

Shelters are great resources for finding a dog or cat that will be a GREAT pet. Although I gotta say this. Rescue org's need to lighten up. There are lots of folks who would want a rescue animal, but the application process is sometimes worse than adopting a child. And some, even charge exorbitant fees to place an animal. ( A pug rescue in Dallas charges 250.00) I applaud these rescue org's for their good work, but they DO need to realize that they are in the business of getting these animals new homes, and to ease up on the roadblocks they put in applicant's paths.

These 2 awesome dogs have been networked for months now. They are so great that the kill shelter doesn't want to put them down, but they may have no choice. NO one has inquired about them, no one wants to rescue them and the 1 person who decided to give them a chance, set them up to fail by not integrating them correctly with the cats. They are breaking my heart and if I could have 4 dogs I would totally take them. Please, please share and crosspost. It's the only chance they have to live.
