Bow to Wow's 'Best in Show': Six top dogs looking for homes

Jill Rappaport

By TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport

On the heels of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, we have our own champion pooches on parade in this month's installment of Bow To Wow.

At Animal Care and Control in New York City, we found (as always) beautiful, sweet, amazing animals all waiting for loving homes. From purebreds to mutts, every dog is a winner!

Starting with our non-sporting group here is Cody, a 7 month old black and white Lhasa Apso pup. Cody is the most adorable mop top, so content just to crash in your lap!

Next is the toy group. Here we have a mighty miniature Chihuahua named Atlas. Atlas is a 4 year old male who's energy and personality make him the perfect pooch to keep you amused all day long.

Now in the terrier group we have beautiful Bentley, an adorable, extremely well-trained wheaten terrier. This lovable boy is too cute for words and smart to boot! He shakes hands on command.

In the hound group, we have a twofer — that's right, two of the most adorable dachshunds named Joey and Zoe. The pair loves to kiss, cuddle and play with each other, so we would love to get them adopted together if possible.

Finally in the herding group, we have a fabulous fellow who is a very rare boy. Oliver is a 1 year old Belgian Malinois. These dogs are known for their bomb sniffing prowess and have been wonderful soldiers of war, so getting a dog like Oliver would be a special gift indeed.

Six wonderful canines all hoping to find permanent homes and ALL champions in our eyes!

How do you adopt/get info on any of the dogs shown this morning, specifically Bentley the Wheaten Terrier. I've already got a 4yr old female Wheaten, Snickers.

    Thanks

    Michelle

My first day volunteering at the local shelter this emaciated shepherd looking dog arrived. 4 yrs and 30 lbs later he is my Belgian Malinois, Charlie. He is highly energetic, talented in Agility and Obedience training and the most appreciative, loving, sweet dog (I call him a Belgian Mallomar because he's all marshmallow on the inside) I have ever met! Anyone who considers adopting one should do some research on this breed but if you decide it is a good fit for your life I promise you will be richly rewarded!

How funny, Michelle, WE are Wheaton owners, as well, and would take Bentley in a second. Our Wheaton, Riley, is the most wonderful dog EVER!! Hoping Bentley can find a wonderful family. They will be the lucky ones!

How can I adopt 'Cody' the little black and white Lhasa Apso you showed this morning? My dog Alfie looks like his cousin/brother even if he's a Bichon/Havanese mix. We've been looking for a companion for him. I'm in Vancouver Canada but would gladly attempt the travel costs.

      Thanks

Interested in adopting the Belgian Malinois! Beautiful puppy dog. We just lost our 6 month old Great Dane puppy to a heart attack 2 weeks ago. Our girls are very sad and need cheering up. thanks, Rebecca

            Hi everyone,

If you're interested in getting more information about the dogs featured in Bow to Wow, please go to the the Animal Care and Control in New York City website. If you reach out to them, they should be able to help you! Thanks for watching!

              Hi Lisa--

If you have a special phone number or e-mail address for AC&C you may need to post it here, as AC&C is known in the rescue community for rarely answering their phones. And beyond the adoption efforts shown on TODAY (which AC&C should be doing on a daily basis with every vehicle available, including social media) they are also known for a robust euthanasia program where curable and adoptable dogs are destroyed every day. Here is but a two-week sample (the video is not graphic, but is still very moving):

Please help us save more adoptable dogs by sponsoring a thorough investigative segment on AC&C, including unannounced site visits-- you will be amazed at what goes on in an organization that claims it "rescues" over 40,000 animals annually. The question to ask is: what happens after the rescue?

              Hi Lisa (and Jill Rappaport)

My charity, Ribbon Recycling ( www.ribbonrecycling.com ), collects unused and unwanted dog-show ribbons from all over North America, and distributes them to SPCAs and dog-rescue groups around the country. The groups use the ribbons on adoption days, just as you did on the February 17 show, "Bow to Wow's 'Best In Show'", featuring rescue dogs from Animal Care and Control In NYC.

Would you like me to supply you with ribbons for your adoption shows? I will also contact Animal Care and Control. If you'll go to my website, and click on the "customize" link, you'll see what some rescue groups have done with the ribbons to make them even more appealing to potential new families. There is also a dog-rescue group write-up under the "news" link.

Ribbon Recycling originated by collecting unused and unwanted horse-show ribbons, and distributing them to therapeutic riding facilities and other therapeutic programs, as well as to childrens hospitals, and any organization in need. The dog-show people caught wind of it, and have been very generous with their donations. (Word of mouth via the Internet is a powerful thing!)

I'd be happy to ship all the ribbons you'll need. Thank you for your terrific work in trying to find rescue dogs forever homes. My family and I are strong believers in rescuing animals in need, and will do anything we can to support people and programs (such as yours) that help them find loving homes.

              Thanks,

              Sue M. Copeland

Our family is very interested in the cute puppy Cody! Our two year old puppy just had to be put down two weeks ago and we are all devastated that we don't have a little doggie to care for. We miss taking her for walks and watching her play. If we had another dog we wouldn't be feeling sad. we would have a whole new puppy life! When I saw cody, I new he would be perfect for my family! Email me at griffinpandl@verizon.net!

                Thanks!

May I just say I LOVE this segment and all you do for animals in shelters!!! All four of my animals are rescued and I wish I could afford more!!!!!!! (and have the proper amount of time to invest) My pets are my little loves and I receive more satisfaction from them than I could ever express in an email. Just want to say how much I appreciate seeing these happy stories and that I hope more people would rescue instead of supporting puppy mills. Thank you, TODAY SHOW for supporting and highlighting shelter pets!!!! I LOVE your show and Jill !!!!!

Cody looks exactly like my 8 month old TIBETAN TERRIER. Not a common breed and often mistaken for Lhasas. TT's have a sweet temperment and are very "in tune" to their master. If Cody is indeed a Tibetan Terrier he will be a very wonderful member of a lucky family.
