Ann Curry honored at 2012 Matrix Awards

    Astrid Stawiarz / Getty Images

Ann Curry and Meredith Vieira attend the 2012 Matrix Awards Luncheon at Waldorf Astoria Hotel on April 23, 2012 in New York City.

Our Ann Curry was honored with a 2012 Matrix Award Monday afternoon. Presented by New York Women in Communications, Inc., the prestigious honors celebrate the accomplishments of women across the media spectrum.

Praised as “a courageous broadcaster,” Ann was the very first woman cited in this year’s class of honorees, a formidable list that also included Tyra Banks, Glenn Close, and former Ronald Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan.

Making the moment even sweeter, Ann was presented with her Matrix Award by another member of the TODAY family, Meredith Vieira. It was a fitting tribute, since it was Meredith that Ann succeeded as a TODAY anchor last year.

Ann earned her award for her tireless dedication to journalism. “I’m old enough to remember how hard it was for women in our business 30 years ago,” she told journalist Robin Jay. “To get an award from other women in the communications industry means I’ve come full circle – it’s a really sweet award to me.”

Offer your congratulations to Ann in the comments below!

    Carnivorous co-anchors crash Matt's drool-worthy cooking segment

    By Ian Sager, TODAY.com

    Looks good, doesn't it?

Don't worry: You weren't the only one wishing you were closer to Daniel Boulud’s roasted leg of lamb this morning.

Matt had the honor of assisting the chef during the segment, leaving Al, Ann and Savannah out in the cold, looking for a way in – literally.

"Oh gosh, guys, I’m sorry," Matt remarked amid muffled screams from his hungry peers.

"He locked the door!" Ann shouted, presumably while looking for something to break the door with.

The trio eventually found their way in, and promptly stole the plate of lamb from Matt. Check out the video below to find out how they got past the door (and for more lamb beauty shots).

If you're interested in trying the recipe for yourself, here are all the details. (Just be sure to lock the door securely before you start cooking.)

Ian Sager is TODAY.com's editorial supervisor. He would have been right behind Savannah, Al and Ann.

And the most huggable TODAY anchor is...

    By Jillian Eugenios

    Updated April 4, 4:05 p.m. ET:

"I'm proud to be the 'Charmin Tissue' of the TODAY show!," said Matt Lauer, the winner of Arrow Senior Management residences' most huggable anchor contest. "And I intend to defend my title with gusto!"

And well he should: He only beat Ann Curry by one vote, despite his fans' best efforts. That narrow margin hasn't gone unnoticed by Ann.

"ONE vote?" Curry said Wednesday afternoon. "I demand a recount! I want a hug, dag nab it."

Ann Grimmer, a resident in St. Louis, Missouri, said she wanted Matt to win so much she voted for him “a couple of times.” The residents were told of the winner at a Hug an Anchor party Tuesday. “It’s always fun to win,” Grimmer said. “It’s always a big deal.”

    Original post:

It was a tight race for the title of most huggable anchor on Hug an Anchor day, but frontrunner Matt Lauer managed to secure the nomination and win the title.

Voters at the Arrow Senior Management residences, which have been spearheading the movement in their communities across the U.S., chose Matt Lauer to beat out his rivals for the title.

    YouTube

An Arrow Senior Living center resident casts her vote.

As TODAY.com previously reported, Lauer was tipped as the probable winner as he had been in the lead in both the TODAY.com poll and in the unofficial exit polls that had taken place throughout the Arrow communities.

The team at Arrow have published several videos documenting Hug an Anchor Day festivities, which have featured residents and staff members dancing with cardboard cut-outs of their favorite anchor.

Among the seniors, Kathie Lee Gifford came in third, with 28% of the vote. The Kathie Lee Gifford team were fierce competitors, said Amanda Tweten, Arrow's COO, rallying their base through cocktail parties fueled by pink martinis.

In an extraordinarily tight race for the title of America’s most huggable anchor, with Ann Curry coming in second, beaten by only one vote by Lauer.

In the TODAY.com poll, Matt Lauer came in first with 28% of the vote, and Ann Curry came in a close second. A TODAY family group-hug came in third, with 14% of the vote.

When a resident at Arrow was asked what he’d be doing during Hug an Anchor Day he said, “I’m going to watch the TODAY show.”

How will you celebrate the big day?

Anticipation builds on the eve of Hug an Anchor Day

    By Jillian Eugenios

The results of a major contest will be announced Wednesday.

April 4 marks National Hug an Anchor Day, when it will finally be revealed which TODAY host is the most huggable, according to the residents of Arrow Senior Living Management.

As TODAY.com reported last week, the nationwide network of Arrow communities has been gearing up for the decision deadline with primaries, parties and video montages featuring cardboard cut-outs of their favorite anchors. The residents will hear the results of the vote tomorrow and promise a video will accompany the announcement (we tend to believe them).

The poll has been heating up on TODAY.com, with over 500 people casting their vote for the most huggable TODAY anchor. Matt Lauer is currently in the lead.

The crew behind Arrow Senior Living Management posted a video yesterday, as residents revealed what question they'd ask the TODAY anchors, if given the chance. Both Pauline Imlay of Hollybrook Senior Living of Orange in Santa Ana, Calif. and Dorothy Slack of The Atrium of Belleville in Belleville, Ill. would ask Matt, “Are you married?” (Answer: Yes. Sorry, ladies).

Earlene Justice, also of Santa Ana, says she just wants to take him on a date. Stella Schnipper of The Atrium of Belleville says she would give Matt not only one hug, but two.

Another Santa Ana resident, Jack Stites, has a special question for his nominee, Kathie Lee Gifford: “I would ask how she got so beautiful and, ‘What are you doing tonight?’”

“I think it’s probably going to Matt," said Judy Nobles, Arrow's quality assurance coordinator. “Everybody think he’s handsome and they want to marry him.”

Amanda Tweten, the COO of the company, agrees. “I honestly think Matt Lauer is going to win this one. I can’t tell you how excited they all are; this is all they talk about.” She described a resident who became so giddy over the race, she rushed off to tell her son about it, and has been busily making calls before voting is closed.

It isn’t only the TODAY anchors getting the love. Residents from the St. Louis Arrow community have plans to stand outside the NBC-affiliate "Show Me St. Louis" studio Wednesday to give hugs to the anchors there. “They’re excited,” Tweten said of the residents. “They’re going to get their hair done.”

Ann: Hire veterans to give economy 'fighting spirit'

Amid news the economy is improving, one group seems to be getting left behind: veterans.

The numbers are stark: The national unemployment rate is 8.3 percent; veterans under the age of 24 face an unemployment rate of 30 percent, Ann Curry reported this morning on CNBC.

She joined Carl Quintanilla hours after they co-hosted TODAY from Studio 1A to discuss a new NBC News initiative, Hiring our Heroes — a program she says she's almost "too passionate" about.

"There are an enormous number of highly skilled, highly trained people who have great things to offer, can give the fighting spirit to U.S. companies and the economy," Ann said. "And we shouldn't miss this boat."

Hiring our Heroes aims to help veterans find jobs. NBC will shine a light on the issue, provide employment resources and hold free job fairs across the country.

More than 1,500 veterans and military families and 100 companies are expected to participate in events on March 28th at the USS Intrepid in New York City and in Chicago and Fort Hood, Texas. Not in one of those locations? TODAY is partnering with Monster/Military.com to host a virtual job fair.

Find more details and sign up for the job fairs here.

Yes, I understand the concept and agree that Vet's should be hired.... but other than military experience what training to they bring to the table? And I'm afraid in today's business environment, that's what companies are looking for..... it's not pretty to hear, but it's the truth....

15 top Ann moments spanning her 15 years on TODAY

Slideshow: Ann Curry’s distinguished career at TODAY

    Evan Agostini / AP

    Launch slideshow

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

    Happy Ann-iversary!

Ann Curry will mark 15 years with TODAY on Sunday — serving as an anchor for one-fourth of the broadcast's lifespan.

15 of Ann's remarkable moments are listed below in no particular order. Check them out and then vote at the bottom on your favorite.

And then leave a comment congratulating her below!

    1) Joining TODAY as news anchor
She had "huge shoes to fill," joked Matt when Ann took over his news desk spot on March 11, 1997.

And fill them she did — for more than 14 years, traveling all across the globe to bring viewers closer to the world we live in.

    2) Discovering her Japanese roots
Ann journeyed to her mother's remote Japanese village as part of a TODAY series where anchors traced their roots.

It was bittersweet, as Ann saw relatives for the first time since both her parents passed away. "I'm so grateful to see my family," she told her cousins.

"How proud and pleased your parents would be right now having seen what you did," Matt said. Ann teared up: "I wanted to honor them."

    3) Getting a trim for a good cause
Talk about a good hair day! Ann donated more than 10 inches of her mane to Locks of Love in 2006 after her daughter McKenzie encouraged her to get an on-air shear.

TODAY turned the plaza into what Matt called a "high-end salon" — with Katie Couric as a gleeful barber. And with only a few chops, Katie held a year's worth of Ann's hair as a trophy.

Ann was not the only one to go under the scissors. She inspired other plaza-goers to chop their mops as well for the good cause.

    4) Broadcasting live from the South Pole
Ann was dispatched to Antarctica in 2007 as part of TODAY's Ends of the Earth series. Drama mounted for days as weather problems delayed Ann and the crew from reaching the South Pole.

    She finally made it.

"Just a few moments ago we touched down at the South Pole," Ann proclaimed live via satellite phone in negative 53 degree Fahrenheit temperatures (not counting the wind chill)!

It was the first-ever live network broadcast from the earth's southernmost point, where only about 7,000 people had ever visited. Once there, she proudly marked NBC News' territory on the ceremonial pole!

    5) Performing stand-up comedy
Ann doesn't scare easily; she's traveled through war zones, jumped out of a plane and admitted to millions that she hadn't showered for nine days.

But in 2007 she revealed the one thing that terrifies her: Telling jokes. After a dare from Meredith, Ann faced her fear and enrolled in comedy school, which required her to perform a stand-up routine in front of hundreds of people.

    6) Finding woman missing in tsunami
“My sister ... is missing,” one of Ann's Twitter followers wrote to her after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. “I will do my best,” Ann tweeted back from the devastated region.

Armed with a photograph of the missing teacher and moved by the family's plea, Ann spent hours searching evacuation centers.

And then, good news came. She found the woman and helped reunite her over the phone with her family.

Ann's presence on Twitter also helped get much-needed aid and medical attention to people in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Twitter named that message the most powerful tweet of 2010.

    7) Going one-on-one with Ahmadinejad
Ann has traveled twice to Iran — a nation hostile to most foreign journalists — for an exclusive interview with president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In 2009, the leader defended his violently contested re-election; in the 2011 video below, he revealed the news that the imprisoned American hikers would be released “in a couple of days.”

    8) Carrying the Olympic torch
Ann ran through the streets of New York City with the Olympic torch as part of the iconic relay before the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Games.

But moments before her run, she admitted she was a bit nervous: "What if I drop it?" she said. "What if the flame goes out?" Turns out there was a close call during the jog: She almost tripped over a manhole cover.

Everything turned out fine, and Ann created an unforgettable memory. "Holding this torch and running with it is such an honor," she said.

Ann later raised more than $3,000 for the Salvation Army by auctioning the torch off to the highest bidder.

    9) Dazzling on the catwalk
Work it, Ann! Donning a red gown, our anchor strutted her stuff on the catwalk for a show that helped raise awareness for women and heart disease.

It's not the only time she's been heralded for her style. People magazine named her as "chic at any age" in 2011, and viewers often clamor to get her look.

    10) Spotlighting African struggles
Ann has traveled the world to report on dire situations.

In April 2006, Ann interviewed Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and their two adopted children in Namibia. The star couple was there to raise money for education in poor nations.

She has also reported extensively from Darfur, Sudan, once joining George Clooney on a trek through the country as the actor worked to raise awareness of the conflict there.

    11) Climbing Kilimanjaro
As part of TODAY's second Ends of the Earth adventure in 2008, Ann climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

It was a difficult trek. Because of all the equipment the team needed, more than 100 porters were recruited to assist with the ascent up the most difficult route to the summit.

The team was successful in documenting climate change's effects on the glacier, but turned back from the 19,000-foot peak due to altitude sickness.

“We haven’t had a shower in nine days,” Ann told the anchors in Studio 1A. “It’s getting kind of ripe.”

    12) Blushing after Elmo confesses his 'love'
Elmo totally crushes on Ann Curry! The red "Sesame Street" star even wrote a poem for her:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Elmo loves the TODAY Show and Miss Ann Curry too,” Elmo said.

He also surprised Ann on her 10th anniversary with a song while looking back at their fond moments together.

The feeling must be mutual, as Ann's always a bit speechless around the crimson Muppet. “The only time I saw Ann kind of flummoxed was when she was with Elmo,” Al said.

    13) Interviewing the Dalai Lama
Ann met the Dalai Lama outside Studio 1A for his first live morning news show interview in 2010.

The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet said that human beings are becoming more compassionate and have the ability to overcome the world’s problems.

She spoke with him again in 2011 about the importance of spreading his message via social networks and China needing to come to terms with democracy.

    14) Jumping off of a bridge for charity
Is there anything Ann won't do for a good cause?

She bungee jumped 120 feet off of a bridge live on TODAY after viewers raised $10,000 for charity.

“If you’re going to do something as crazy and stupid as that, you want to feel it was worth it," she said. "I wanted some good to come out of it, and I think it did.”

She also inspired the awe of Tom Hanks, who watched from Studio 1A before his interview.

“I can’t follow that. I’ve done nothing,” Hanks said. “She is Superwoman as far as I’m concerned! I’m just some goofy actor who pretends to do things. Ann is actually doing it.”

    15) Assuming the TODAY co-anchor position
“I’m Ann Curry and I’m in for, I guess, nobody this morning — me, myself and I.”

That’s how Ann started her first day as co-anchor on June 9, 2011 after 14 years at the news desk.

"It’s such a thrill,” Ann said. “I really feel like Cinderella — Ann Curry, aka Cinderella today."

On assignment: Ann Curry's photographs from Sudan's Nuba Mountains

    NBC News anchor

Climbing into Sudan's Nuba Mountains I turned and saw her standing above me, in a dress so clean and white it seemed out of place with her surroundings.

Something about her seemed at once strong, even heroic and yet achingly vulnerable. She didn't move as I raised my camera to take a picture of her and the sleeping baby she carried: two children among thousands, and perhaps tens of thousands living in caves to survive the relentless bombing.

Even small children know to run at the sound of the government's Antonov warplanes.  Our news team had just sat down in at the mouth of a cave when the plane's "Whoooo woooooh" sound grew very loud. Suddenly children and adults started scrambling inside, tripping and falling on top of each other in a silent fear. It is odd, I realized, how quiet children are here, uttering not a word even at this moment.

All we heard was 89-year-old Cooli Kafi Darbar praying. Cooli is a former school teacher, who has been credited with translating the Bible into Kronga, the language of the Nuba people.

His quiet prayer translated, "The God of Isaac and Abraham, thank you for everything, for suffering and for blessings."

Hearing this, his 64-year-old daughter Hanna began to stare, seemingly at some memory, before she started to cry. Then she parted her lips and sang, "Why can't I find any comfort in this world," tears rolling down her left cheek and dropping off her chin.

    It is a good question.

The Nuba are being bombed nearly every day now by their own government that seems intent on clearing them from these mountains.

When the people of South Sudan fought for independence from the government of President Omar al-Bashir (the same President Bashir who the International Criminal Court has accused of genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur), the Nuba fought with them. But when territorial lines were drawn, the Nuba were left on what they considered the wrong side of the border.

Sudan's government says it is fighting an insurgency. We met Nuba rebels who showed us the artillery they said they'd confiscated from government troops, but they insisted their people were attacked first.

People say government military units called the "Abu Tiera," led by Ahmed Harun (also accused by the ICC of crimes against humanity in Darfur), went door to door, targeting only Nuba homes with systematic rape, murder and kidnappings while leaving Arabs untouched.

There are no accurate numbers of how many people may have disappeared, but some experts say satellite images are consistent with reports of mass graves.

Brigadier General Nimori Morat told us, "We are fighting just to live."

The United Nations estimates that in the Nuba Mountains, and in the neighboring states that have also been attacked in the wake of South Sudan’s independence, 585,000 people have been displaced.

This seems to be a war over territory and, in one area, over oil, but it appears to have also unleashed ethnic cleansing.

"They say our skin is like charcoal," the elderly Cooli told us. Another woman who survived an attack said, ”They called us dogs and said we are the only people because we are Arabs and you are Nuba."

How could a war such as this be largely unknown to the rest of the world?

Journalists are not allowed into the Nuba Mountains. It was only because we snuck across the border that we reached the caves, and even then, we were wary of bombs and Sudan military units a few kilometers away. Ultimately we had to leave the same night because it was unsafe, we were told, to stay.

Sure enough, some of the places where we had been were attacked at sunrise and there appeared to be an effort to cut off the road into the Nuba Mountains completely. How will the people in the mountains survive this war, and soon, the potential famine that will result from being unable to plant their crops? Humanitarian aid has also been cut off from the mountains.

While the international community wonders what, if anything, can be done, we saw a boy in a refugee camp wearing, of all things, an Obama t-shirt.

And we heard several people, including children, thank us for taking their picture. If they are going to suffer, and even die, they at least want the world to know what is happening here.
