Lester Holt gives 'some advice on breaking the rules' to new grads

On April 28, the TODAY anchor delivered the commencement speech to Pepperdine University's class of 2012. Read his full address below.

By Lester Holt, Weekend TODAY anchor

President Benton, with deep appreciation I humbly accept this honor. To the graduates, members of the faculty, special guests, parents and friends I extend my welcome and congratulations. I am so pleased to be able to address you.

Receiving this honor is humbling, but more than humbling, I must admit it is improbable. Graduates, I never made the walk you are about to make to receive a college degree. I started working at an early age, DJ-ing on the radio when I was in high school. I went to college while managing to work full-time as a newsman. The career was taking off quickly, new and exciting opportunities arose and so I left school short of earning my degree. I headed off to San Francisco to chase my passion.

I’ve rationalized all these years that my career itself, covering events around the world, interviewing important people, pounding the halls of power with microphone in hand, has been worth multiple college degrees. I won’t diminish my experiences, for it has been an unmatched education, that I wouldn’t trade for anything. But let’s face it. It is not this, for which you have all worked so hard these past four years. I am proud of you, and as I often do at college commencements, I also feel a sense of awe looking at all of you. Even a touch of envy.

So then, what do I have to offer you? Well, maybe some advice on breaking the rules, or on occasionally learning to drive against the traffic flow.

I can also tell you that hearing the word “no” is not always a bad thing. Having never asked the question, on the other hand, is. The first time I applied for a job at NBC in New York I was 18 years old. Hey, who knew they didn’t hire high school kids? OK I knew, but come on — how many high school kids had the gall to ask? I still have the rejection letter, and every time I look at it it never fails to bring a smile to my face. The way I look at it, it just took them 23 years to reconsider my application.

You know, in some cases it’s going to take that kind of gall and confidence to stand out among the crowded field of job seekers in this environment. When the class of 2012 started here, our economy was plunging into the depths of recession. And while you were busy studying here, the rules out there were changing. Including a lot of the rules about how one successfully enters the work force. The course of our economy almost dictates that many of you will have to drive against the traffic flow to find your way. You’ll need to tap your creativity, innovate or draw an unconventional roadmap to success.

How and why the doors of opportunity open when they do and where they do, has always been a mystery to me. In my case persistence got me to the door step of those first couple of jobs, but when it came to the door actually swinging open for me? Well, the reality is, luck and timing are always our best friends. It’s not always about you.

The one thing you can control is whether you’ve got the goods to walk through that door when it cracks open. The skills and determination to embrace the challenge. To quickly learn the tasks and navigate the ladder, for which there are rarely written instructions.

Video: Lester dishes from La-La land

On the other hand, when those doors don’t budge open at first, you’ll need to find and draw from a deep reservoir of confidence within you, to power on to the next door step, and if necessary the one after that, and the one after that.

The changing rules also allow us to re-imagine the definition of success. When I left school to focus on making it as a radio reporter I didn’t know where it would lead. As I said before, I was chasing a passion. Going into TV wasn’t on my radar. I wasn’t thinking salary potential either, or even what my dream job was. I just wanted to embrace the craft. All I knew was that I loved the news.

As for all of you who are graduating today, rightfully basking in your accomplishment, the world is already demanding of you an encore performance. It wants to know “now what?” “What’s next?" That’s the conversation that surely follows this ceremony over the brunch table, and the conversation that has probably consumed you for the better part of this past year. From here, the old rules dictate that you quickly step onto the track of upward mobility and not look back. Happiness, passion and fulfillment are bonuses but not requirements.

Sometimes, however, in our single-minded pursuit of “what’s next?”, we fail to reflect on “what’s now?” You’ve all got smartphones, I assume, and you might be recording this now. You are of course the generation of citizen photojournalists. Armed with smartphones, you are ready to capture any and every moment and upload it onto Facebook well before my colleagues and I can get it on the air.

You are also a generation that remembers every detail of what it was like the first time you crawled your little diapered butts across the living room floor. The day you took your first steps, or when you melted down on that first day of preschool. Not because your early memories were so sharp but because you lived those moments through home video.

And so I’m curious to know if you will really remember this day? What it smelled like. What it looked like. The emotions and expressions on those around you. The sun beating onto your faces. How uncomfortable those shoes are you have on. Or the hat on the person in front on you that’s obstructing your view. Or will you remember it only through video clips on the 3-inch screen on your iPhone? Are you living your reality through electronic viewfinders and 140 characters, or are you taking it in with your God-given senses? You want reality programming? It’s all around you. This is what’s now. Absorb what’s now. Breathe it in.

My point of course is not about the downside of making videos. (I do that for a living). It’s about making sure you don’t miss the scenic pull-offs on life’s journey just because someone’s in your face constantly asking “what’s next?”

Video: Lester plays at famous honky tonk bar

More than 30 years in the business and now anchoring and hosting three major network news broadcasts and I still get the questions: What is your dream job? What do you want to do next? I used to be able to tick off those jobs pretty quickly. Now my answer is very simple: “If this is as far as I got in my career,  then I would have been blessed with an amazing career and some amazing opportunities.” And you know what? I could have said the same thing four jobs ago.

Don’t for a moment lower your expectations or your ambitions. But don’t let them consume you to the point you become indifferent to the journey itself. Or to the extent that you fail to recognize how good you may have it at certain points along the way.

If I had any regrets about my own career path it would be those times I got so busy climbing the ladder, or so eager to step up to the next wrung that I forgot to pause and turn and appreciate the view around me. And those times I was so conditioned to see life in a video frame, that I didn’t allow myself to soak in those things you can only really see with your own eyes.

At NBC Nightly News we have a number of bright and talented college interns who are absolutely essential to our operation, and they attend the editorial meetings with the entire staff each day. At the end of their internships, before they head back to school, we like to put them on the spot in those meetings by asking them the simple question: What have you learned? And so in that spirit, and in so much as I consider my 35-years in news my formal education, perhaps the time has finally come for my oral dissertation. Let me share with you the most important things I’ve learned along the way.

Number 1, when you strip away political and religious ideology, what unites us is far bigger than what divides us. I’ve traveled the world and much of this country, and spoken to regular folks from Kabul to San Salvador, Beijing to Delhi, Tennessee to here in Malibu, California, and to a person, we all want the same things: To provide for our families, live unmolested and in a safe environment, educate our kids, and to be free. As you examine “what’s next,” and your own possibilities in life, I ask you to consider: Aren’t those the goals we’re all really chasing?

Number 2, I have learned that we are an amazingly resilient species. I have witnessed the horrors of war and crime, and countless natural calamities, and time and time again I have marveled at how people who have lost virtually everything — their homes, their jobs, their communities, and even their loved ones —  manage to pick themselves up, put one foot in front of the other, and do what they have to do to carry on. The takeaway? You have no idea what you are capable of until you are truly tested.

And Number 3, I’ve learned that we have to meet each other halfway. Every conflict I’ve ever covered has at its root the fact that no one is really listening. The measure of a good journalist is often the toughness of our questions. But what I have come to know is that in life it is not the questions we ask, but rather our ability to hear the answers that truly enriches our understanding.

In conclusion, let me express my sincere hope that as you head down your career path, pursuing your passion and fulfillment, that it proves to be a deep, enriching and lasting education. Never stop learning. You’ll graduate from here today, but in life class is never really dismissed.

Class of 2012, thank you for your kind attention. Congratulations and may God bless you and keep you.

Good Job Lester even if that anoying Jena is jealous. It is amusing to watch her take digs at your wonderful honor. Maybe someday she will get one? Welcome class of 2014 the most weird sounding voice in morning Tv and she still acts like she is in Junior High.

Lester Holt: The office cookie monster?

    Chiara Sottile

    Lester spots his prey.

By Lester Holt, Weekend TODAY anchor
I'm a morning person, so rising at 4-something on weekends is not a huge challenge for me. I am not, however, much of a morning eater — not at that hour, at least. The problem is, my hunger usually kicks in shortly after we go on the air with Weekend TODAY. So when Amy Robach or Jenna Wolfe is doing a segment, I sneak away to our pantry on the second floor of studio 1A, for what I call my noshing runs.

    Chiara Sottile

He goes in for the kill.

There are usually leftover bacon and eggs that were put out much earlier in the morning for the technical and stage crews, along with some peanut butter and bread, muffins and oatmeal raisin cookies. The latter are my weakness. On more than one occasion, the camera has cut to me after a break as I'm still trying to swallow the last bite of cookie. Those of you who have thought to yourselves, "That guy talks like he has marbles in his mouth," should know that they are not marbles, but oatmeal cookies.

When we run out of them upstairs, I've been known to appropriate some from our greenroom, pocketing a few with one hand as I smile and greet our guests with the other. One time, Dave Zinczenko of "Eat this, Not That!" fame, busted me in the act. The cookies apparently fall in the "not that" category. I made a note of it.

    Chiara Sottile

Lester shows us how it's done.

The one thing I don't consume during TODAY — which surprises many people — is coffee. I find that a lot of water helps wake me up, without the buzz. I love coffee, but usually reserve a double espresso as an afternoon pick-me-up before settling in to do the weekend “Nightly News.” Dairy is a no-no too during the show, as it can make it hard to a-nnun-ci-ate.

As for peanut butter and public speaking, not a good idea — think Rocky Balboa.

Tell us, what are your guilty pleasure eats during the workday?

The work day is when I can actually stick to eating healthy. I enjoy a whole grain Eggo with all natural peanut butter followed by an apple for a mid morning break, salad for lunch, and a Fiber One bar around 3. I do admit, that on occasion, I will go to Tim Horton's on my lunch and splurge on a lat …

Lester Holt dishes on taste-testing with "Bizarre Foods" host Andrew Zimmern

    By Lester Holt

A question I’m often asked by viewers is – what do I do when I taste something I don’t like in one of our food segments?

First of all you need to know that I like almost everything. Eating makes me hungry.  That said, occasionally when something one of our guests whips up is not to my liking  I’ll  usually say something like “mmmmm..interesting.”

But politeness had to go out the door for today’s guest, Andrew Zimmern from The Travel Channel’s show “Bizarre Foods.” Nothing he brought looked appetizing and I let him know that in as friendly a manner as possible. I’m sure he’s used to it.  He samples strange and unappetizing looking foods from all over the world on his show.

    Chiara Sottile / Weekend TODAY

Behind the scenes of Weekend TODAY.

This morning, Andrew brought with him deep fried turtle, geoduck (a shellfish,) braised BBQ raccoon and hog ponce, better known as stuffed pig stomach and pig intestine.  Normally the idea is for the hosts to try a little of each food that a guests prepares.

OK, the turtle was actually quite mild. Not great, but certainly not stomach turning.  I tried to tell myself the geoduck was just a piece of sushi, but in reality the texture was hard and quite unappealing.  Still, I reluctantly soldiered on to the raccoon.  It actually would have tasted quite good had I not had the image of a raccoon rummaging through the garbage stuck in my head.  The stuffed pig stomach was a no-go for me, as my own stomach was already on the verge of revolt.  Eventually I tried a nibble of the intestines.  I wish I hadn’t.

So, what’s the best way to sum up this morning’s bizzare food segment?  How about... mmmmm, interesting!

It is perfectly understandable that they would be wary of trying some of these foods but their disrespect of their guest on the show was extremely rude. Not only did they disrespect Andrew but they also disrespected the people who do happen to enjoy these foods and the cultures that they come from.

Weekend TODAY's 'beary' special Call of the Wild

    By Erica Zucco

On Saturday morning an unusual visitor made his way to Studio 1A as part of Weekend TODAY's 'Call of the Wild' segment -- and he was quite a hit.

Busch Gardens Animal Ambassador Julie Scardina brought a few animals to the studio to teach Lester and Amy how they cope with brutal winter temperatures. Amy watched as Lily the groundhog chomped away on some fruit and Lester learned that desert tortoises can feel it when you pet their shells... but Sierra the black bear stole the show. Check out the video below -- around 3:35, you might catch Lester sneaking behind Amy! -- and then check out some of the tweets about our new furry friend.

Here are a couple tweets that came straight out of Studio 1A:

Lester Holt tweets about the bear on Weekend TODAY.

Lester tweeted a photo of the bear eating to the side of the set. You can follow Lester on Twitter by clicking here. (On Saturday morning, one of his most popular tweets was a shoutout to his son -- a morning anchor at the NBC affiliate in Chicago!)

    Twitter: @MFRANZEN_

Michelle Franzen tweets about the bear on Weekend TODAY.

NBC News correspondent Michelle Franzen also made a stop to check out the bear after reporting about Stephen Colbert's plan to explore a presidential run. You can follow her on Twitter by clicking here.

"Did you bring the breadcrumbs?" This photo was taken by Kyle Thomes. This picture is of my son Charles with 2 of his good buddies, Violet and Maxence. It reminds me of that time when we are kids and all we know is what's in front of us. 3 kids out to conquer the world -- who knows what they will accomplish, but they will do it together!

    Jenna Wolfe, Weekend TODAY anchor

This was me dangling at the top of Toronto's CN TOWER, the world's tallest free standing structure. I love heights. Do they scare me? Of course, but I thrive on that fear. It's what lets us know we're alive. To be 2000 feet in the air with nothing more than a safety cable between you and the ground is exhilarating. I look at this picture and it always reminds me of how I stared fear in the face and owned it.

    Jenna Wolfe, Weekend TODAY anchor

This was me surfing off the Barbados coast. I was born and raised in the Caribbean, a corner of the world where "island time" is the only time. This snapshot encapsulates peace and serenity. It's just me and a warm wave and my familiar West Indies wind guiding me as I surf. Nothing better.

    Amy Robach, Weekend TODAY Anchor

Amy Robach enjoys some family time on a sunny day. Look close and you'll even see a few baby chicks joining in on all the fun!

This is me and my nephew Max, named after my late grandfather....the most wonderful man to ever walk this planet. Max is the perfect little bundle courtesy of my brother Michael and my sister-in-law Jill. This picture just screams LOVE. Unfiltered, unconditional, blissful LOVE.

    Lester Holt, Weekend TODAY anchor

The water shot was taken a couple of days before the tropical storm hit NYC. I was along the water's edge at Battery Park desperately trying to compose my thoughts before shooting an on-camera standup. A colleague took this.

    Lester Holt, Weekend TODAY anchor

The kids were following us on a documentary shoot near Aurangabad, India over the summer. They were naturally curious but respectful as we got our pictures. Afterwards I went to thank them and we snapped off a few shots together.

    Lester Holt, Weekend TODAY anchor

The dog photo was a few days after we took-in an abandoned dog. He was undernourished, dehydrated and tired and all he wanted to do was curl up on our laps and so I obliged. We named him Maddie.

Showing those pictures to millions of people is, in fact, by definition, exploitation. The kids gained nothing relative to what the program did. They were used.

Lester: The joy of learning a new skill

    By Lester Holt, Anchor

    Virginia Sherwood / NBC News

Being a reporter is like going to school. Every day you have to learn something new, and every day there is a test. You have to immerse yourself in the story of the day, sort out the facts and share what you know with your viewers. If you get it wrong, they’ll let you know.

As much as I love that part of my job, a few years ago I realized that the “lessons” I was learning were not on my terms but on the terms of whatever happened to be making news. I decided it was time to learn something new. Something that would be difficult.

At the age of 50, I began learning another language: Italian. The choice was pretty easy: I love the language, the country and the culture. I signed up for private lessons at a local language school and faithfully attended classes up to two times a week. The first few weeks seemed easy as I quickly learned some basic verbs, like to go, to speak and to listen (or andare, parlare, ascoltare). I was even putting simple sentences together, like "io mangio al ristorante," or, "I eat at the restaurant." Then came learning how to put things in different tenses, of using the proper articles and pronouns, and even how to say “you.”  Trust me, there are a lot of ways to say “you” in Italian!

Learning Italian turned out to be hard, which was exactly what I was hoping for as it kept my interest. My demanding schedule makes it difficult to study as much as I’d like, but I sneak in study lessons. My good friend and Italian journalist Marina Carminati comes by the office several times a month to help me refine my conversation skills. And when I travel on assignment you can often find me sitting on the plane pouring over my books.

I didn’t realize how much I had learned during the last two years until I covered the Amanda Knox trial in Perugia in September. I was able to understand a lot of what was happening around me -- and, better yet, to be understood.

I started Italian around the same time my Sunday co-host Jenna Wolfe decided to take up the guitar. I’m happy to report Jenna has stayed with it too. Watch the update below that shows you how we are doing now and talks about the value of learning new skills as an adult.

TODAY'S Lester Holt wanted to learn to speak Italian. Jenna Wolfe dreamed of learning to play the guitar. How'd they do? Well, see (and hear) for yourself.

Boy can I relate to your desire for learning a new language and especially Italian. I too am learning to speak Italian, having begun 2 years ago at the age of 58. I love all things Italian and as an artist generally find myself painting scenes of Italy.

Weekend TODAY team keeps up with Kardashians for Halloween

The weekend TODAY team celebrated Halloween a bit early this year with a Kardashian red-carpet affair – hosted by the one and only Melissa Rivers!

Lester dressed up in his finest tank top to pull of Bruce Jenner's Olympic look. He was joined by Janice Huff, who dressed up as Kris Jenner.

Amy was Kim Kardashian and Jenna was Khloe. CNBC's Melissa Francis joined the gang as Kourtney.

    Watch the costume reveal above!

And what does it take to pull off dressing up like the Kardashians? The real-life family gave our anchors some pointers.

Our weekend TODAY team also celebrated Halloween by visiting a prison many say is haunted with SyFy's "Ghost Hunters" team. Read about their adventures here.

Lester, Amy and Jenna hunt ghosts in haunted prison

We all love a good ghost story this time of year. Our brave anchors decided to star in their own this weekend.

Lester, Amy and Jenna went inside one of the country's oldest institutions, which is considered by many in the paranormal community to be haunted.

They headed to Eastern State Penitentiary with the crew from SyFy's "Ghost Hunters." It's familiar ground for them: The "Ghost Hunters" cameras recorded what they believe to be an apparition in a previous episode.

Did our anchors make it through the night? And if so, did they hear or see a ghost? Watch the two-part series below:

Weekend TODAY team shares their favorite horror movies

With Halloween fast approaching, our weekend TODAY anchors shared the movies that keep them up at night.

Lester said he loves the scene in "Alien" where the creature pops out of a man's stomach, whereas Amy said "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" still gives her chills.

Jenna's choice was a bit more unconventional: "Jaws 2." "That shark was like the end of the world to me," she said. "Each tooth was like an animal!"

Lester and Amy laughed at the choice. "It's just so not scary!" Amy said.

But none of them had anything on the news reader, Melissa Francis. Melissa acted in the horror film "Bad Dreams" in the ninth grade.

"It's not a Jaws 2, but looks really scary," Lester joked.

Watch the fun segment above, including a few of Melissa's big scenes. And let us know your favorite horror flick in the comments below. Our TODAY.com Entertainment team shared their favorite spooktacular movies here.
