Guess which TODAY anchor is one of People's most beautiful!

    TODAY

    By Julieanne Smolinski

    It's Kathie Lee!

People's annual 50 most beautiful issue was revealed on TODAY Wednesday, and KLG made their feature on women who are hot at different ages.

Beyonce graces the cover, and inside, Kathie Lee is honored, along with other sexy over-fifty ladies like fellow TODAY family member Meredith Vieira, Julianne Moore and Michelle Pfeiffer. Congrats, KLG! We think you're smoking hot.

Hoda and guest co-host Willie Geist discussed the mag, which hits newsstands Friday. Willie, who's sitting in for KLG, agreed with People's sentiments, and revealed that there's a secret cabal of male Kathie Lee and Hoda super fans, who watch because they think the ladies are foxy.

"They have those TVs on at work at 10 o'clock," said Willie.

Are you a guy who secretly watches the fourth hour? Well, 1) Don't be ashamed; it's awesome, and 2) Tell us in the comments!

Julieanne Smolinski is a TODAY.com contributor. She secretly watches Antiques Roadshow.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is crazy. Besides, when you've had as much plastic surgery and botox as KLG, you shouldn't even qualify. There isn't a straight man in this world who watches KLG and Hoda. Hoda is the only redeeming quality to the show.

Ann Curry honored at 2012 Matrix Awards

    Astrid Stawiarz / Getty Images

Ann Curry and Meredith Vieira attend the 2012 Matrix Awards Luncheon at Waldorf Astoria Hotel on April 23, 2012 in New York City.

Our Ann Curry was honored with a 2012 Matrix Award Monday afternoon. Presented by New York Women in Communications, Inc., the prestigious honors celebrate the accomplishments of women across the media spectrum.

Praised as “a courageous broadcaster,” Ann was the very first woman cited in this year’s class of honorees, a formidable list that also included Tyra Banks, Glenn Close, and former Ronald Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan.

Making the moment even sweeter, Ann was presented with her Matrix Award by another member of the TODAY family, Meredith Vieira. It was a fitting tribute, since it was Meredith that Ann succeeded as a TODAY anchor last year.

Ann earned her award for her tireless dedication to journalism. “I’m old enough to remember how hard it was for women in our business 30 years ago,” she told journalist Robin Jay. “To get an award from other women in the communications industry means I’ve come full circle – it’s a really sweet award to me.”

Offer your congratulations to Ann in the comments below!

'Finally!': TODAY plaza staple Linny comes into Studio 1A

    TODAY

Meredith returns to TODAY for Linny, as her sign points out.

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

Meredith made a return trip to the TODAY plaza this morning holding up an amusing sign: "Forget Matt! Here for Linny." Minutes later, when Matt invited Meredith inside to make her big Olympic announcement, Matt told Meredith to bring Linny along with her.

Who’s Linny? Linny Boyette is TODAY's super fan. He stands outside on our plaza every day, rain or shine.

He and Meredith were close during her five years on the broadcast. She even took up a spot next to Linny the day she announced she was leaving the broadcast.

"Finally!" Ann joked was Linny's reaction. "After all of these years!"

Steve Veres is an editor for TODAY.com. He's glad Linny finally got a chance to warm up after a winter of frigid temps.

This is why I miss Meredith so much! She is honestly the best! I love Matt but he can't do it alone. Glad Lenny finally got inside!

The TODAY legend who returned is...

    TODAY

Meredith stops by our plaza and stands next to devoted TODAY fan Linny.

Updated at 7:30 a.m. ET: Meredith is back!

She made a surprise return to TODAY this morning, after a tease in which viewers saw only her face in shadow.

"You look better in silhouette," Matt joked.

Meredith was very clear: She really came back to see super-fan Linny and J. Fred Muggs, the former TODAY icon who Meredith thought was the actual returning "legend."

"This cheap stunt was not my idea," she joked. "I thought I was coming to see that chimp. But the chimp's in retirement in Florida refused to come up here. So you got the chump instead."

Slideshow: The many sides of Meredith

Viewers have come to know Meredith Vieira as a savvy newswoman with a zany streak. Here's a look back at her colorful career.

Did you guess correctly? And are you happy to see her back? Let us know in the comments.

All joking aside, Meredith came back to announce she was joining TODAY in London for the Summer Olympics.

"Of all the things that I did when I was on the TODAY show for five years, I think the Olympics was my very favorite experience," Meredith said, adding she'll report on Britain's "flair and the flavor" and host the opening ceremony with Matt and Bob Costas.

Another perk? TODAY will start its broadcast at noon local time. "I can just drink all day long," Meredith joked.

Original post from 7 a.m. ET: Who is the legend returning to TODAY?

We've had many TV icons who have graced the broadcast during the past 60 years, including the first female co-host and a chimp who often stole the show.

You've woken up to these TV icons every day, but only one is returning for today’s show.

Who do you think it is? Leave your guesses in the comments.

Busy bee Meredith Vieira pays a visit to KLG and Hoda

    TODAY

    By Julieanne Smolinski

Our girl Meredith Vieira came back to Studio 1A for a visit, after inspiring a musical sendoff when she left in June. The last time she showed up on TODAY was to celebrate our 60th anniversary. Prior to that, she was decked out in full Queen Elizabeth II regalia. OK, OK – it was Halloween. But she could have shown up in a crown and a corgi sleigh for Groundhog Day for all Kathie Lee and Hoda care, because come on. It's Meredith.

The fourth hour ladies were dying to know what she's been up to, other than sleeping in until the sinful hour of 8 AM.

And because it's Meredith, she hasn't been sitting around drinking flavored coffee and birdwatching. There's her production company's indie film "Return," the story of a female veteran adjusting to life after deployment (starring Linda Cardellini and Michael Shannon, opening in New York and L.A. on Feb. 10 and will be on iTunes on Feb. 28). She's also back on TODAY next week to talk about her "Rock Center" debut segment with Mimi Alford, the 68-year-old former White House intern who allegedly carried on a years-long affair with JFK. (Meredith says the interview will be "shocking and disturbing." Cannot. Wait.)

Between that and going booze-and-sugar free for a post-holiday cleanse (boo!), she's certainly keeping busy. Kathie Lee and Hoda congratulated her on her success.

"Are you happy for me?" joked Meredith. "Then you're drunk."

They couldn't let her leave without a little old-school fourth-hour swag. Meredith ribbed the ladies about a vintage KLGH mousepad and remarked how "very virginal" Hoda looks on it.

    TODAY

"Things have changed since you left the show," replied Hoda.

Former TODAY anchor Meredith Vieira returns to Studio 1A to talk to Kathie Lee and Hoda about her latest projects, including her production company and life after TODAY.

Julieanne Smolinski is a TODAY.com contributor. She has a Meredith Vieira mousepad.

TODAY marks 60th with an anchor homecoming

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

With a ceremony fitting a diamond anniversary, TODAY toasted six decades on the air with an anchor homecoming that brought current and former hosts together.

After 60 years, at least two things haven't changed at TODAY: We're still live from Rockefeller Center and aiming to uphold the vision of our first anchor Dave Garroway, who wanted to "put you more closely in touch with the world we live in."

"Essentially, the program has remained the same. And that is you get up to find out if the world is still there. Is everything OK?" Barbara Walters said. "We're the people you trust."

TODAY nodded to our history by staging a scene straight out of 1952 on New York City's 49th street. The screen went black and white as a stand-in Dave Garroway broadcast from the "Window of the World." Staffers dressed in period costume looked on, and from the crowd came Matt Lauer to introduce the big reunion.

The Look: Rainbow bright: Ann wears a TODAY anniversary dress

Hugh Downs, Barbara Walters, Jim Hartz, Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Bryant Gumbel, Willard Scott, Deborah Norville, Katie Couric, Meredith Vieira, Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, all gathered in Studio 1A to share their stories.

Several former TODAY Girls also joined the broadcast, including Florence Henderson, Estelle Parsons, Lee Meriwether, Robbin Bain Gaudieri and Beryl Pfizer. And in another memorable moment, the TODAY news readers reunited at the news desk.

"We have more anchors than the Sixth Fleet!" Ann Curry joked. "Boy, after the week we've had celebrating, I feel like 60," said 54-year-old Matt Lauer.

Matt, Ann and the whole crew also wished other living co-anchors Gene Shalit and Joe Garagiola well, saying they were both sorely missed at the festivities.

During an interview with all of the past anchors, they recalled witnessing more than half a century's most important and influential news events.

Katie remembered her reports from the Columbine shooting, while Meredith talked about covering the attack at Virginia Tech.

allDAY: 6 iconic TODAY moments for our 60th anniversary

"We had been to a candle-light vigil during the evening, and one of the students came up to me and he said to me, 'Can I just get a hug?'" Meredith said. "This show was sort of a surrogate mom to him. We were his family."

The moment turned more reflective as the past anchors recounted their time on the broadcast.

"The genius of Pat Weaver when he first started this is still true today," Brokaw said. "It is the electronic breakfast table. It is the great national morning newspaper."

Matt asked each to name the broadcast icon they watched before joining the show. And several named Garroway as their inspiration.

"I admired that his approach was so easy going and so ad-libbed, literally. It was so new then," Hugh Downs said. "Garroway was a model."

Watch the full round table in video below:

Tom Hanks, who has been a guest on the show 22 times, wheeled out a giant cake for the champagne toast.

"The only reason I pushed out the cake was that the trainer didn't have enough time with J. Fred Muggs," Tom joked about our former chimpanzee anchor.

The first family, national landmarks and celebrities also toasted the show's celebration.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama saluted the broadcast in a special message.

"Over decades and across generations, the TODAY show has become a part of American culture," said the president. "We know you'll have many more years of success," Michelle added.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed January 13 "TODAY Show Day." "This show I think sets the standards for a lot of other television," he said. "And you should be very proud and all of the people that have worked here over the years."

The Empire State Building lights up in TODAY colors.

National landmarks across the U.S. marked the occasion Thursday night and Friday morning. The Empire State Building lit up in red, yellow and orange — the first time it has ever been illuminated for a television show — while Niagara Falls glowed with TODAY hues.

A New York Fire Department fireboat spouted orange-colored water in front of the Statue of Liberty, the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas and the Cira Centre in Philadelphia saluted TODAY, and the Goodyear Blimp congratulated the show with a special message while flying over the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles.

Meredith on Charla: Despite attack, her spirit 'remains beautiful'

    Bizuayehu Tesfaye / NBC

Meredith Vieira has followed Charla Nash's story from the beginning, meeting her in November 2009, six months after a chimpanzee savagely attacked her. She answered some questions from TODAY producer Stephanie Siegel about seeing Charla for the first time after her face transplant.

What went through your mind when you saw Charla for the first time after her face transplant?
I realized I was witnessing a medical miracle. There have only been five full facial transplants performed in the world, and I am so happy that Charla is one of the very fortunate recipients.

She looked beautiful walking in arm-in-arm with her wonderful daughter, Briana. And she brought me a present of scented candles. For the first time since the attack in 2009, Charla has her sense of smell back. We sniffed each candle: one cinnamon, one pumpkin and one balsam. Nothing ever smelled so good.

Were you surprised by how she looked?
I was amazed at how wonderful she looked; given the fact the surgery was only six months ago. If I did not know she'd had a face transplant, I never would have guessed it.  The donor's face is already conforming to her bone structure.

Story: Chimp attack victim speaks about new face, new hopes

NBC's Meredith Vieira sits down with Charla Nash, who recently underwent a face transplant that's helped her regain the life she had before being brutally attacked by a chimp.

You connected with Charla two years ago when you first met and interviewed her. What is it that made you interested in following her story?
I found her story compelling on every level. Here was this woman, who even by her doctors' accounts should never have survived her injuries. But thanks to their heroics and her incredible will to live, she did survive.

What kept her going once she learned she had lost her hands and most of her face, including her eyes? How is the human spirit capable of rising above even the most seemingly insurmountable odds?  Those were the questions I wanted to answer.

Story: Behind the scenes with the real Charla Nash

Charla allowed me into her life at its lowest point and showed me the true meaning of courage and persistence. Her family – brothers, Mike and Steve, and daughter, Briana – stayed always close by her side, and it was their love that carried her through the darkest days.

What strikes you when you see what she has gone through on this journey?
Beyond her sheer will to live – as Briana put it, "she's stubborn!" – it’s Charla's sense of humor that stands out to me.

The very first time I met her in November 2009, six months after the attack, I took her for a walk down the hospital corridor. Her face was covered by a veil because she "didn't want to scare people." Her right arm with only a thumb at the end was latched around my arm for support. Her other hand was gone, literally having been ripped off in the savage chimp attack.  I was feeling very sorry for her, wondering to myself how she would ever get on with life.

Charla was walking at a pretty good clip and I pointed out how fast she was going. She responded, "You move very slow."  I burst out laughing, in awe that she could still crack a joke given everything that had happened. I believe humor is a great healer, and I've seen Charla use it many times since then.

Nov. 16, 2009: Charla Nash, who was brutally attacked by her friend's chimpanzee, opens up to TODAY's Meredith Vieira about her recovery and the relationship she had with the chimp and his owner.

This was the first time you walked around with her in public without a veil. How did people react to seeing her?
Charla and I went for a walk in Boston Garden Thursday afternoon. Despite the brisk air, there were lots of people out. At one point I leaned into her and said, "Charlie, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but no one is looking at you because you just blend into the crowd." She was so happy to hear that.

Imagine being afraid to go outside because you know that people are staring at you or are frightened of you. Even without eyesight, Charla was acutely aware of other people's reactions.

A few people did realize who she was because of all the stories that have been done on her. One lady named Madge came up to us and thanked Charla for inspiring so many with her courage. And she reminded Charla that she was just one of thousands who had prayed for her. Thank you, Madge.

What can people learn from Charla’s story?
Charla would want you to learn that exotic animals are not pets and should not be treated as such because of the danger they potentially pose.  She wants stricter laws preventing the sale of such creatures and more enforcement of those laws already on the books.

I learned that the will to survive is a powerful force, that human courage knows no bounds and that, despite the many "faces" Charla has worn, her spirit has never changed. It remains beautiful.

The Queen returns! Meredith shows up as surprise Halloween guest

    TODAY

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com editor
A royal wedding wouldn't be complete without the queen. And who else could pull off the regal role but our own Meredith Vieira?

The former TODAY anchor surprised our hosts and audience members during our annual Halloween bash, this year themed to the royal wedding.

And of course Meredith played the Queen of England, granting her blessing to the marriage of Prince Williams (Matt) and Kate Middleton (Ann). They were joined by Prince Harry (Al), Pippa Middleton (Natalie), Prince Charles (Savannah) and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie (Kathie Lee and Hoda). Check out images of the anchors here.

Since leaving TODAY, Meredith hasn't been far away. She joined "Rock Center with Brian Williams" as a correspondent. The show premieres tonight at 10 p.m.

Read all about the TODAY Halloween celebration here. What did you think of the costumes? Were you surprised? Let us know in the comments below and vote on Facebook which costume you think was the best.

She's back! Meredith named NBC News special correspondent

    TODAY

We knew she couldn't stay away for long!

Meredith Vieira, who stepped down as TODAY anchor in June, will return to NBC News effective immediately as a special correspondent for "Rock Center with Brian Williams," the new prime-time newsmagazine debuting this fall.

And the best news? In her new role, Meredith will also report for TODAY!

"From the day that Meredith joined us at NBC News, we knew she was family," said NBC News President Capus. "Meredith’s immeasurable talents reach beyond the newsroom to connect with the extraordinary people she interviews as well as the viewers at home. She is as genuine as you can get, a world-class journalist and a captivating storyteller.  These skills will be hugely beneficial to 'Rock Center with Brian Williams' and across NBC News."

We had little explanation of WHY Meredith is back and wondered how this change affected Ann's role as anchor. The Today Show is family to me after watching so many years and have waited for an explanation. When you leave, coming back doesn't seem like an option, and I wouldn't want to see Ann uproot …
