    Religion and royals: TODAY.com's 11 most-watched videos of 2011

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

TODAY.com posted nearly 8,000 videos in 2011. They were an eclectic mix, ranging from covering the devastating tsunami to cooking a delicious tiramisu, from Coldplay performing on the plaza to our anchors playing with cold snow.

You cheered Osama bin Laden's death and were captivated by the homeless man with a golden voice. Royalty and religion reigned and Charla Nash, the chimp-attack victim, revealed her new face.

Here are the 11 most-watched TODAY.com videos from the past year.

    1. Details on US raid that killed bin Laden
May 2: Osama bin Laden was killed during a gun battle with Navy SEALs and CIA paramilitary forces at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, near that nation’s capital. NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski has the details on the raid.

    2. Homeless man with golden voice ‘thankful to be here’
Jan. 6: Panhandling only days before appearing on TODAY, Ted Williams expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he’s received since becoming a YouTube sensation, and says he’s found “a new sense of spirituality.”

    3. Chimp attack victim’s new face revealed
Aug. 11: Charla Nash, who was mauled by her friend’s pet chimpanzee in 2009, has undergone a groundbreaking face and double hand transplant. Her brother Stephen and daughter Briana talk about her remarkable recovery and show pictures revealing her new face.

    4. Video shows devastating Japan earthquake
March 11: NBC’s Anne Thompson reports on the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on Friday, igniting fires across the nation and causing a devastating tsunami that threatens Hawaii and the United States’ West Coast.

    5. Prince William, bride celebrate with a kiss
April 29: Royal newlyweds Prince William and Princess Catherine follow the tradition of showing their affection in front of a crowd of well-wishers at Buckingham Palace.

    6. Biblical proportion: Dutch man replicates Noah’s Ark
June 22: On the banks of a small river in the Netherlands, Johan Huibers has constructed a real-life Noah's Ark, built to biblical scale using the ancient measure of cubits – an arm’s length, elbow to fingertip.

    7. US forces hunt down, kill Osama bin Laden
May 2: Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, is killed by United States Navy SEALs and CIA paramilitary forces in an attack on his Pakistan compound. NBC’s Chuck Todd reports.

    8. Dazed actress escorted off stage
Sept. 24: Actress Kim Delaney had to be ushered off-stage during a gala honoring Robert Gates after she struggled to give a rambling speech, fueling fears that her past substance abuse demons may have surfaced. NBC’s Ron Allen reports.

    9. Prince William shakes off nerves with humor
April 29: The royal groom shows his humorous side at the altar and gives his bride a wink and some smiles during their wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

    10. Overslept? Watch royal wedding recap in 3 min.
April 29: From Duchess Kate’s walk down the aisle to her kiss with Prince William, TODAY relives the fairy-tale wedding of the royals.

    11. ‘Pops’ had ‘huge wings’ in heaven, boy says
March 21: Colton Burpo, 11, and his parents say the boy visited heaven during a near-death experience, where he sat on Jesus’ lap and met his great-grandfather and the sister his mother miscarried.

The most popular text pieces of 2011 on TODAY.com mostly matched the list above. The royal wedding was your favorite by far. Stories about the boy who says he visited heaven and the man with the golden voice came in second and third place, respectively.

And who could forget the image in the heartwrenching piece about a dog mourning at the casket of a fallen Navy SEAL? That was the fourth most clicked story, while singer Amy Winehouse being found dead in London came in fifth.

The Queen returns! Meredith shows up as surprise Halloween guest

    TODAY

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com editor
A royal wedding wouldn't be complete without the queen. And who else could pull off the regal role but our own Meredith Vieira?

The former TODAY anchor surprised our hosts and audience members during our annual Halloween bash, this year themed to the royal wedding.

And of course Meredith played the Queen of England, granting her blessing to the marriage of Prince Williams (Matt) and Kate Middleton (Ann). They were joined by Prince Harry (Al), Pippa Middleton (Natalie), Prince Charles (Savannah) and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie (Kathie Lee and Hoda). Check out images of the anchors here.

Since leaving TODAY, Meredith hasn't been far away. She joined "Rock Center with Brian Williams" as a correspondent. The show premieres tonight at 10 p.m.

Read all about the TODAY Halloween celebration here. What did you think of the costumes? Were you surprised? Let us know in the comments below and vote on Facebook which costume you think was the best.

Bridal designer Amsale Aberra dishes on creating four couture gowns for TODAY

TODAY contributor and stylist to the stars Louis Licari and TODAY and Us Weekly contributor Jill Martin give two fans and brides-to-be a royal transformation.

Bride Janet Hayes gets the royal treatment from assistant designer Debi Jones, Amsale, and pattern maker Fee-Yee Lee.

    By bridal designer Amsale Aberra

When TODAY called to see if we would participate in their royal wedding makeover we jumped at the chance! Working in the bridal industry, we have a little bit of royal wedding fever. Then came the catch: There would be four brides with different visions and tastes who all needed to be sized, fitted and perfected in less than a week!

Our made-to-order gowns are usually commissioned anywhere from eight months to one year before the wedding. So needless to say, we aren’t used to working on such a condensed timeline. With this daunting task looming over us and time ticking away, we got right to work.

When a bride typically walks into our Madison Avenue salon, she’s greeted by an "Amsale Girl" who listens carefully to her wish list for the most special dress she’s ever purchased. The bride is then guided through the process of selecting her perfect gown.  Once she's made her choice we assign a battalion of designers, stylists, alterations specialists and pattern makers to perfect every detail for her walk down the aisle.

Amsale works her magic on a custom gown for bride Stacey Filbeck as Fee-Yee Lee and Debi Jones look on.

While we didn’t have the luxury of that process for this endeavor, we did want to give the brides an experience that felt just as special. Conversations via e-mail and phone determined each bride’s preference, style and size so when they finally arrived at our design studio, their perfect gowns would be waiting for them!

After the fittings, a flurry of work began as each dress was tweaked and perfected.  I usually have an entire studio of couture seamstresses working on gowns for brides worldwide but today we dropped everything to work on these four dresses!

All the chaos was worth it in the end. As you saw, each bride looked absolutely fantastic. We are so happy for them. Congratulations to all four happy couples!

Meredith eats zebra, gets asked if she's Natalie's mom in London night out

    Updated 4/28:
What do young, London socialites do for fun in London? Meredith and Natalie were determined to find out during a girls' night out before the royal wedding.

Natalie's first stop? Love Bakery for some cupcakes. "Calories don't count when you're a princess," Natalie said before doing some royal retail therapy.

Meredith enjoyed the Archipelago restaurant, which serves all types of exotic foods. Meredith tried eating scorpions, zebra and crocodile. Watch the video below to see her hilarious reactions.

"The truth is nobody else would do it," Meredith told "Access Hollywood Live's" Billy Bush and Kit Hoover in an interview a few days after.  She adding that her producers looked desperate for her to try the offerings that afterwards made her feel sick. "I took one for the team."

The TODAY anchors also hit up The Ship, a pub on the Thames river. "Lots handsome and beautiful people," Natalie said.

It didn't end well for Meredith, however.

"They asked me if I was her mother," Meredith said while pointing at Natalie and laughing. "How's that for a killer!"

Watch the video above to watch Natalie and Meredith's entire night out, thanks to Conde Nast Travelers' Kate Maxwell.

Meredith also revealed in her interview with "Access Hollywood Live" which prince she thinks is cuter. Watch the video below to find out her answer!

TODAY's Meredith Vieira and Natalie Morales tell "Access Hollywood Live's" Billy Bush and Kit Hoover about their girls' night out in London, where they went to places Prince William and other royals frequent.

Matt Lauer on 'Late Night': 'I'm a method anchor'

Matt Lauer dressed in his royal wedding finest for his appearance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

"I'm a method anchor," Matt told Jimmy. "I'm getting into my role."

"You're doing the Monopoly game off Broadway?" Jimmy asked. "Planters Peanut Commercial," Matt joked.

Matt talked about what TODAY will do for the royal wedding, including seven hours of coverage starting at 4 a.m. ET. Find more information about NBC's coverage plans here.

He compared it to a football game. "We have a pregame show," he explained. "We have the ceremony itself -- we just shut up and let it happen. And then we have the post-game critique and analysis."

What should you be watching for? Women, of course, want to get a glimpse of Kate's dress, Matt said. Men, on the other hand should look out for Kate's "Uncle Gary." Who's "Uncle Gary?"

Watch the clip from "Late Night" above. Click "show more" to watch the video of Matt, Ann and Al reacting to the interview on TODAY.
