Matt Lauer named among Time's 100 most influential people of 2012

Notice someone familiar on this year's Time 100 list?

Managing editor Rick Stengel revealed the news magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world this morning on TODAY, and our very own Matt Lauer made the cut!

The collection of names is a who’s who of prominent movers and shakers from around the globe. Matt joins a list including President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Warren Buffet, Tim Tebow, Kate and Pippa Middleton and SPANX founder Sara Blakely. Find the full list here.

"I couldn't be more flattered," Matt said on TODAY. Watch his full reaction.

To complete the honor, Time's editors asked radio personality and new "America's Got Talent" judge Howard Stern to pen the piece on Matt. After all, what better way to be feted than by the “King of All Media”?

"This is a guy who never gives up," Stern wrote. "Matt is cool and relaxed and so we're cool and relaxed and we can deal with the complexities of a presidential interview, a great sports event or the wacko."

We asked our Facebook audience what traits make Matt influential.

Ruth Boch wrote Matt "gets your attention" with "his smile and his tone of voice," while Michael Gregoire wrote he "asks questions most journalists do not." Weigh in on our Facebook page.

    Congratulations, Matt!

Bob Dotson, Rick Schindler win award for American Story

    TODAY

TODAY's Bob Dotson travels the country telling stories of ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things – but rarely toots his own horn.

So the Society of Professional Journalists is doing it for him.

Dotson, along with TODAY.com editor Rick Schindler, has been awarded SPJ’s 2012's National Sigma Delta Chi Award for Best Online Column Writing.

"Bob Dotson has been in more motel rooms than the Gideon Bible, crisscrossing this country, four million miles, practically non-stop, for forty years searching for people who are practically invisible," the organization wrote about Dotson's work. "They may not run for President or go on talk shows, but without their contribution, the kind of country we love would not exist."

Read the five American Story columns that netted Dotson and Schindler the top honors:
In Joplin, a diner serves up shelter from the storm
Wounded warrior comic mines hilarity from horror
Despite paralysis, Iraq vet is thankful to be a dad
Amputee champion gives others legs to stand on
70 years later, ghosts of World War II remain indelible

Time magazine: @TODAYshow is a top Twitter feed

Time magazine named TODAY's Twitter account @TODAYshow as one of the best of 2012, calling it one of 140 feeds that are "shaping the online conversation."

"The TODAY show has nearly perfected the relationship between Twitter and TV," wrote Allie Townsend, Time's social media editor. Read their entire nomination here.

The feed is run primarily by Zoe Marcus, a producer on the broadcast. She's helped by TODAY.com editor Steve Veres and researchers Erica Zucco and Wesley Oliver. Ryan Osborn, the senior director of digital media for NBC News, started tweeting from the @TODAYshow account when he was a producer for the show.

Life Inc. project honored as among Best in Business

    By Martin Wolk

TODAY.com's Life Inc. blog is being honored with one of the top awards in business journalism Saturday for its 2011 special report “We are the Median.”

Our series, by lead writer Allison Linn, lead multimedia producer Jim Seida, and multimedia producers John Makely and John Brecher, has been awarded a Best in Business award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

The series explored varied experiences of people living on the nation’s median household income of $50,000 a year. For some, $50,000 a year was plenty, but many others were struggling to get by.

This series was inspired by you, the readers of Life Inc., who responded by the hundreds when we asked you about your experience of living on the nation's median income. When you connect with us to share your experiences and concerns about money and the economy, that helps us do a better job as journalists.

We love to hear from you, so please comment below, connect with us on Facebook or send us an old-fashioned email.

Kudos! TODAY wins three Gracie Awards

It’s official: Women love TODAY and TODAY.com.

The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation announced Thursday that TODAY has won three Gracies — awards that recognize exemplary programming created for women, by women and about women in radio, television, cable and new media.

    TODAY

TODAY won a Gracie Award for outstanding news talk show, and Savannah Guthrie received one for her outstanding individual achievement as a reporter/correspondent. (Not bad for the newest anchor on the TODAY block!) TODAY Moms, a blog that has been sharing parenting news and views on TODAY.com since 2009, won for outstanding blog.

“On behalf of all the TODAY Moms contributors and readers, I am so psyched about this award,” said Rebecca Dube, TODAY Moms’ senior editor. “The TODAY Moms community is an amazing, thoughtful, smart and funny group of women (and men!) and I’m really proud to be a part of it.”

According to the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, the Gracie awards program “encourages the realistic and multifaceted portrayal of women in entertainment, news, features and other programs.” The national awards will be presented at a black-tie gala on May 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Al -- the 'glue of TODAY' -- flies high on magazine cover

What could possibly distract Natalie and Savannah from their anchor jobs (besides Brad Pitt standing within 15 feet)? A magazine featuring Al Roker on its cover!

The duo congratulated our affable weatherman this morning for the front-page photo and corresponding article in this month's issue of American Way, the in-flight magazine of American Airlines.

Calling it the "definitive" profile of Al Roker, Savannah noted one particularly nice comment from TODAY's executive producer Jim Bell: "Al is the glue that holds this show together."

"Without you we'd be unhinged," Natalie joked.

What's your favorite Al memory? Tell us in the comments.

TODAY hits 16 years as America's favorite morning show

We started winning on Dec. 11, 1995. And we haven't looked back since, thanks to all of our loyal viewers.

TODAY has been rated America's number one morning news program every single week for the past 16 years. It's the longest-running current winning streak in all of broadcast TV.

How well do you remember 1995? (We know it's been a long time!) That was the year when a terrorist bomb went off in Oklahoma City and O.J. Simpson was acquitted. The top-grossing film was "Die Hard with a Vengeance," and Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" was ripping up the radio waves. Tell us in the comments your most vivid memory from the year.

The milestone comes just weeks before TODAY celebrates its 60th anniversary early in the new year. We've compiled a trove of historical information on our TODAY at 60 page.

Billboard magazine honors TODAY music maven

    TODAY

TODAY senior producer Melissa Lonner stands with Hoda Kotb and Billboard's Bill Werde.

Congratulations to NBC News senior entertainment producer Melissa Lonner!

She's the one you can thank for bringing such blockbuster acts as Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Adele and her personal favorite, Chris Brown, to TODAY -- and music-industry bible Billboard magazine has acknowledged her importance by putting her in the No. 10 slot on their 2011 Top 40 Women in Music list.

Melissa told Billboard that what she enjoys most about her job is "going to a show at a small venue -- like when I first saw Adele at Joe's Pub -- and saying, 'Holy moley, I've got to get them!' " She said she's also jazzed about taking the show's summer concert series abroad next year when TODAY heads to London for the Olympics.

    Congratulate Melissa in the comments!

Giada's pasta sauce wins top honors from Consumer Reports

    FEATURE PHOTO SERVICE

In a taste test by Consumer Reports, Giada De Laurentiis' pasta sauce was named "Best Buy" among celebrity-branded products.

Congratulations to TODAY contributor Giada De Laurentiis!

Among more than two dozen celebrity-endorsed food products (including products branded by Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali and Paul Newman, for instance), her pasta sauce won top honors in a recent taste test by experts from Consumer Reports, which named it "Best Buy."

Find the recipe for Giada's award-winning sauce in our TODAY.com recipe database.

"Just because you're paying an A-list price doesn't mean you get an A-list product," Consumer Reports senior editor Tod Marks commented to ABC News. "Giada's is very inexpensive, balanced, fresh tasting, and had a buttery taste. Turns out it did have butter, and we loved it."

"It's all about the butter," Giada confirmed to Bites. "It is made with fresh tomatoes and basil and finished with butter."

Chef Giada De Laurentiis, whose tomato basil sauce was named #1 by Consumer Reports, shows TODAY how to make it.

According to the New York Post, Giada's sauce costs only 60 cents per serving -- less than half as much as the runner-up pasta sauce from Mario Batali. "I personally test them several times to make sure they are delicious," Giada told the Post.

Giada De Laurentiis Tomato Basil pasta sauce is sold exclusively at Target.

Have you tried Giada's sauce? Tell us what you think about it in the comments below.
