Bob Dotson, Rick Schindler win award for American Story

    TODAY

TODAY's Bob Dotson travels the country telling stories of ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things – but rarely toots his own horn.

So the Society of Professional Journalists is doing it for him.

Dotson, along with TODAY.com editor Rick Schindler, has been awarded SPJ’s 2012's National Sigma Delta Chi Award for Best Online Column Writing.

"Bob Dotson has been in more motel rooms than the Gideon Bible, crisscrossing this country, four million miles, practically non-stop, for forty years searching for people who are practically invisible," the organization wrote about Dotson's work. "They may not run for President or go on talk shows, but without their contribution, the kind of country we love would not exist."

Read the five American Story columns that netted Dotson and Schindler the top honors:
In Joplin, a diner serves up shelter from the storm
Wounded warrior comic mines hilarity from horror
Despite paralysis, Iraq vet is thankful to be a dad
Amputee champion gives others legs to stand on
70 years later, ghosts of World War II remain indelible

Jeff Rossen named TODAY National Investigative Correspondent

    NBC News

Jeff Rossen has been named TODAY National Investigative Correspondent.

TODAY viewers have seen Jeff Rossen report on everything from auto-repair rip-offs to Charlie Sheen’s meltdown. Now they can expect to see even more of Jeff, because he’s been named National Investigative Correspondent for TODAY. With “Rossen Reports,” a brand-new investigative unit, he’ll file more hard-hitting reports for America’s favorite morning news program, and for “NBC Nightly News,” “Dateline” and MSNBC as well. Robert Powell will head the unit.

Using high-tech hidden cameras and old-fashioned dogged reporting, Jeff has exposed misconduct in such industries as auto repair and locksmiths, and revealed troubling facts about food courts, ice rinks, reading programs for babies, and much more. It was also Rossen who made headlines with his candid interviews with Charlie Sheen during the height of the actor’s dispute with his bosses, as well as leading NBC’s coverage of such high-profile cases as the death of Michael Jackson, David Goldman’s struggle to get his son returned from Brazil, and the disappearance of American tourist Robyn Gardner in Aruba. He was part of the TODAY staff that earned the 2011 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Morning Program. Jeff has also won an Emmy for “Deadline News Writing” and an award from the U.S. Justice Department for his reporting on crime victims.

“With unmatched passion and curiosity, Jeff continues to find the new story angle that keeps our viewers informed,” TODAY Executive Producer Jim Bell said in announcing Rossen’s new expanded role. Join us in congratulating Jeff in the comments below!

Anchors don ugly Christmas sweaters: Whose was the worst?

'Tis the season ... for ugly Christmas sweaters!

Once an endearing gift from a well-meaning grandma, hideous jumpers have become a fad, spawning booming businesses, Facebook groups and sweater parties.

Savannah picked out some especially gnarly knits for our anchors and a few guests (Brian Williams and Matt Damon got roped in, as well as our crew and the entire control room). Check out the pics below and vote in our poll: Whose sweater is the ugliest?

As a person who has unabashadly worn Christmas sweaters (note no "uglly") for 30 years I would like to say this.... I think all you who are now pretending that you want to wear these sweaters as a joke are posers.

TODAY says goodbye to two NBC News family members

TODAY's Matt Lauer and Ann Curry remember Alan Harding, manager of field operations and Cardinal John Patrick Foley, a long-time contributor who was the Vatican's chief of communications. Both passed away this weekend.

We share the sad news that two members of the NBC News family died over the weekend, and both will be sorely missed.

Cardinal John Patrick Foley served as the Vatican’s chief of communications for 25 years and was a long time contributor to our broadcasts. He died peacefully in his home state of Pennsylvania early Sunday morning. He was 76. The clergyman appeared on TODAY several times, most recently during Pope Benedict’s U.S. visit.

We were also saddened to learn that Alan Harding, a recently retired manager of field operations at NBC, died suddenly on Friday, at the age of 62.

“Alan was one of the most upbeat, friendly, funny, generous, hard-working people you could ever meet,” said Matt. “[He was equal parts Santa Claus and Seinfeld. For viewers, it may be hard to understand what a ‘manager of field operations’ is, but in a nutshell, Alan was responsible for making the impossible possible.”

Alan was responsible for some of the most iconic moments from TODAY, as he served as technical manager for the last four Olympic Games, as well as nine installments of the "Where in the world is Matt Lauer” series.

Our hearts go out to the families and communities of these two beloved members of TODAY.

I watch very little television since the commercials have made the quality of TV go way down. When I do have it on and a commercial comes on, I either shut the set or mute it. The greed is rampant and these people do not deserve the pay they are receiving.

Billboard magazine honors TODAY music maven

    TODAY

TODAY senior producer Melissa Lonner stands with Hoda Kotb and Billboard's Bill Werde.

Congratulations to NBC News senior entertainment producer Melissa Lonner!

She's the one you can thank for bringing such blockbuster acts as Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Adele and her personal favorite, Chris Brown, to TODAY -- and music-industry bible Billboard magazine has acknowledged her importance by putting her in the No. 10 slot on their 2011 Top 40 Women in Music list.

Melissa told Billboard that what she enjoys most about her job is "going to a show at a small venue -- like when I first saw Adele at Joe's Pub -- and saying, 'Holy moley, I've got to get them!' " She said she's also jazzed about taking the show's summer concert series abroad next year when TODAY heads to London for the Olympics.

    Congratulate Melissa in the comments!

Producer's notebook: How I made it snow in Barbados

Me, writing the cue cards for Matt's Old Spice intro.

    By Jennifer Long, TODAY Producer

"I'm sorry you want to bring WHAT on the plane?"

"Snow," I sheepishly replied to the Jet Blue check-in desk as I pointed to a sketchy looking taped-up box that said "SnoBiz" on the side.

Production manager Grace Yavana with that sketchy box of snow.

And there began my adventure of making it snow in Barbados.

About a month ago I went to Matt's office to get a sense of what he would like to do for the last day of Where in the World. We knew we'd be on a beach in Barbados ... and we'd had plenty of beach "reveals" in Where in the Worlds past. How could we make this one different?

I suggested constructing a clear platform on the surface of the water to make it look like he was walking on water. You know, like Jesus-style. I'm not sure if he actually didn't hear me or chose not to acknowledge this ... I'm guessing the latter... but all of a sudden he bounced up and said, "What if we did a take on that Old Spice Body Wash commercial??"

Co-producer Krista Brunson transporting Matt's "costumes" to Barbados.

    YES!!!

There began figuring out how to do on a beach in Barbados what Old Spice did so brilliantly in a high-tech Hollywood sound stage. Another challenge: we had to do it live. I had knots in my stomach.

After meetings and scripting and set designing and wardrobe constructing ... I was now standing at the Jet Blue terminal with a box of snow.

OK so the snow didn't make it to Barbados ... at least on that Jet Blue flight. Something about the packaging (apparently Scotch tape isn't an acceptable form of packaging on international flights). FedEx to the rescue.

Shockingly, the snow was the easiest part. A few days ago I looked down at my ringing Blackberry ....and let me tell you ... seeing "Matt Lauer calling" is still a little jarring even to me!

"Hey, so why aren't I ending on a horse like the real commercial does?" Matt asks.

Me: "Cause you're a germ freak ... I never thought you would get on one."

Cut to me at a Barbadian horse farm at 8 am the next morning.

    That's me, on Matt's horse.

I know you have heard Matt say it a thousand times, but our technical crew is the best in the business. For 3 straight days they have been tinkering with the backdrops and camera blocking and lighting to pull off Matt's Old Spice reveal. And it's hot out. VERY HOT.

Our crew really is the best in the business. Here's cameramen Callan Griffiths and Bob Riggio hanging the fake "Canadian Rockies" backdrop.

I'm writing this the night before the big show...Matt is set to arrive to Barbados in just a few more hours.

We just finished our final rehearsals and it's looking pretty great ... we hope it will make people smile.

I do know we made one person smile already. I just looked over and saw one of our local Barbadian crew members staring at our box of snow. I grabbed a bunch of it and handed it to him and said, "dont worry its biodegradable!"

One of our Barbados crew members, holding snow for the first time!

He smiled and said, "Oh it's not that. I've just never held snow before. You made it snow in Barbados!"

Miss a moment? Here's a Where in the World recap!

Natalie and TODAY staffers compete in triathlon

TODAY's Natalie Morales and her Team TODAY Show worked up quite a sweat this weekend when they participated in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon on Sunday.

Not only was Team TODAY Show one of the 9 NBCUniversal relay teams that competed, but they ended up finishing in fifth.

So how quickly did Natalie and her team finish their portions of the race? The anchor completed in the 4-mile run portion of the race with a time of 28 minutes and 42 seconds. Her husband and teammate Joe completed the half-mile ocean swim in 14 minutes and 55 seconds, and Jim Garfield wrapped up the cycling portion. Overall, Team TODAY Show clocked in about 1 hour and 37 minutes.

The Nautica Malibu Triathlon raised a total of $1,120,000, while each of the 9 NBCUniversal teams combined to raise approximately $130,000.

Natalie and the TODAY Show are no strangers to triathlons or marathons. In fact, Natalie is such a fan of them, she was featured on Triathlete magazine. And who can forget when Al and Meredith ran in the New York City marathon in November.

Great work, Team TODAY. Leave your congratulations and well-wishes in the comments below.

5 highlights from the Lend a Hand TODAY tour

    TODAY

    By Jackie Olensky, TODAY producer

TODAY just wrapped up our 10th Lend a Hand TODAY tour Friday -- and it was by far our most successful year yet. We gave away more than $9 million worth of donations!

But it's not just the material items that mean so much -- it's the people we meet along the way. They are kind, caring folk who were hit by hard times yet remain hopeful that with just a little help their lives could be so much better. You can't put a price on those memories.

Here are a few highlights from each day of the trip (and click on the names of the cities for more info about each day):

Alaska, Day 1: Meeting Ma'o Tosi. He is larger than life and left us all in awe of his undying devotion to Alaska and AK Pride.

Las Vegas, Day 2: The staff of the Cosmopolitan Hotel coming together to fulfill as many items on the charity's wish list as possible. They donated $250,000 to The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas without us even asking!

Houston, Day 3: Jenna Bush joining us in her home state. Another highlight: Seeing all of the smiles on the kids' faces. Everywhere you turned you could see their enjoyment and appreciation grow as the broadcast went on -- especially when they saw the Houston Astros and the Houston Rockets players arrive on the scene.

Birmingham, Day 4: Paula Deen taking over! She brings the happy with her wherever she goes.

Charleston, Day 5: The choir singing "Country Roads." We loved how the crowd and charity members joined in.

Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make this happen and to the generosity of hundreds of companies both big and small. Check out these behind-the-scenes photos. And we've already started talking about Lend a Hand TODAY 2012 -- many companies have already committed promising to give even more!

TODAY wins award for 'I Gotta Feeling' viral video

Tonight's gonna be a good night!

TODAY was honored with the prestigious 2011 Edward R. Murrow award for Best Use of Video for recreating the viral lip-dub sensation, "I Gotta Feeling."

The clip aired as part of a TODAY Goes Viral, a special series where America's favorite morning show celebrated America's favorite online videos. It was produced by the esteemed Jennifer Long and featured the entire TODAY staff lip-synching to the Black Eyed Peas song in one continuous camera take.

But words can't describe how much fun we had making it. Relive the video below:

Check out TODAY's twist on the viral-video hit "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas.

We had a blast and had to do it again.  We honored Meredith Vieira by sending her off in a similar way with one final "Journey" around the plaza.

    Watch it here:

The TODAY anchors, producers, crew and more pay a heartfelt musical tribute to Meredith Vieira

Check out more videos in our TODAY Goes Viral series, including a behind-the-scenes clip about what it took to perform the "I've Gotta Feeling" stunt and a profile of John Maltabo, the extraordinary cameraman who pulled it off.

The Edward R. Murrow awards honor excellence in electronic journalism. They were announced today by the Radio Television Digital News Association.

NBC News was also awarded with an Overall Excellence award. It’s  the third year in a row we took home this huge honor.

"NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" was honored for Best Newscast and "Dateline" won for the documentary, "A Father's Mission." Here's a complete list of the winners.

TODAY lets Meredith know we won't stop believin'!

    Update, 2/3/12 at 10:45 a.m. ET

Due to restrictions, we had to remove the video of TODAY's musical tribute to Meredith. Although the footage of our plaza celebration is no longer online, you can still relive the fun of that June morning below.

    Original post

The whole TODAY team got together to send off Meredith in true TODAY style – with a big song and dance!

The crew, producers, correspondents, TODAY.com team – along with special guests Abe Vigoda and Jimmy Fallon – performed a number to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" live on the plaza, wearing color-coded T-shirts that showed the whole world just how much we heart Meredith.

It all began with Meredith and Matt at the piano as the classic Journey song started to play...

    TODAY

That's senior producer Dee Dee Thomas, set writer Jared Carullo and executive producer Jim Bell leading a cheering section in the control room...

    TODAY

Next, Kathie Lee and Hoda grabbed Meredith and ran her out onto the plaza...

    TODAY

Where Al grabbed her, and joined the entire TODAY team...

    TODAY

    TODAY

Who screamed and cheered as they met up with Jimmy Fallon, who rocked out on the guitar and brought her across the street!

    TODAY

When she got back to the plaza, the whole team was performing the choreographed dance they've been perfecting for days.

    TODAY

Even Abe Vigoda was there! Which is why he's been trending on Twitter. (Remember this hilarious moment?)

    TODAY

By the end, Meredith was in tears as Al, Matt, Ann and Natalie presented her with a special keepsake – a picture of the whole gang at the re-opening of the Statue of Liberty.
