Matt to Ryan Seacrest: Are you taking my job?

    By Scott Stump

Ryan Seacrest is coming to NBC, but not to take Matt Lauer’s job.

The "American Idol" host and reality TV mogul will make his debut in primetime as part of NBC’s coverage of the London Olympics this summer.

On TODAY Wednesday, Seacrest addressed the rumors that he has been in discussions with NBC brass to become Lauer’s replacement at the anchor desk.

    Lauer asked the question directly.

“Oh, they didn’t tell you?’’ Seacrest cracked, adding, “I see you doing this for as long as you want to so maybe the question is, how long will you be on the TODAY show?’’

Lauer joked that he wanted “names and dates’’ of the discussions Seacrest had with NBC executives.

"They were mostly about filling in to do weather," Seacrest joked.

Seacrest has long been a part of the E! Network, which is under the NBC Universal umbrella. He said that “the plan is for me to join the NBC family and continue to have a role with the E! Network."

Lauer revealed that the two had dinner together after reports first surfaced that Seacrest could be taking his job.

“I think you would be great at this job, and secondly…Ryan and I are friendly,’’ Lauer said. “We have talked about this and joked about this. There is no tension here. I bought dinner, which I think was completely inappropriate.’’

A likely announcement that Seacrest will remain with “American Idol’’ is also forthcoming.

“I plan to stay there,’’ Seacrest said, stopping just short of making it official. “I expect to be on that show.’’

Seacrest also discussed his burgeoning reality TV empire, as his production company is in charge of the Kardashian family shows and several others.

“There’s clearly an appetite for it, and it makes financial sense,’’ he said.

Earlier in the morning, Seacrest made himself comfortable in Lauer's dressing room and, later his anchor seat. "I can't catch a break," Lauer joked.

Wednesday morning, "Ryan Seacrest" was a trending Twitter topic.

TODAY.com editor Steve Veres contributed to this report.

I do like Ryan but I just could never see him replacing Matt. I just don't see how this guy can have so many jobs....does he ever sleep? I think AI is in it's last years, can't see that show going on too much longer.

Sarah Palin co-hosts TODAY; Matt jokes she joins 'lamestream media'

Sarah Palin made her debut as a TODAY co-anchor in the 8 a.m. hour — or as Matt put it, joined what she often calls the "lamestream media."

How'd it feel? "Organized chaos," she said after it was all over. "I've always said if everything is under control, you're going too slow, as Mario Andretti says too. It's been a great morning."

The former vice presidential candidate jumped right in, throwing her opinions around with our TODAY Professionals panel and weighing in on her experience raising teenage daughters, or as Palin joked, it's "a crap shoot; you do as best as you can."

"That's our motto," Matt joked about the broadcast. "We have that hanging on our wall here."

Not everything went as expected: Palin learned the joys of live TV when Tori Spelling, who joined TODAY to chat about her new party planning book, asked the former Alaskan governor if she'd have another kid. "Ah ... no — the grandkids will come next," Palin said,. seemingly a little surprised.

And the day wouldn't have been complete without Palin weighing in on the 2012 GOP election. She warned candidates not to "play it safe" with their vice presidential picks.

    Twitter

The interest around her co-hosting gig fueled "Matt Lauer" and "Sarah Palin" to the top of the Twitter trends in the United States.

But the Palin kept it all in perspective, recounting an amusing interaction with a fan before the broadcast: "The nicest lady in the world, she stopped me, asked me where I was heading. I said 30 Rock, and she said, 'Oh honey, come here! I told you, Tina Fey is here.'"

I think it is a complete disgrace for the network to support "Where in the World is Matt Lauer" during this period in time when people are unemployed, can't put food on the table and losing their homes.
