Old Spice Guy surprises Matt with a painting -- of Matt

    By Steve Veres, TODAY.com

Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa was so touched by Matt's homage to him during Matt's recent Where in the World trip that he created a video response about their friendship.

"We have shared so many amazing travel adventures together, from shark riding in San Jose to ride sharking in Jose San Lucas," Isaiah said in the video (above). "To commemorate these years of loyal brothership, I have painted you this noble friendship portrait."

    TODAY

He then presented a gift to our anchor: A painting with the Old Spice Guy shirtless in a towel and Matt holding a raccoon. There's also inexplicably a giant gummy bear in the painting (which looks like the one we wrote about in our Bites blog).

This "will make a priceless addition to your home and certainly not irritate your wife Annette with its presence," Isaiah said.

After the Old Spice video played on TODAY, Isaiah walked out live on the show to surprise Matt and our anchors with the painting.

"Get out!" Matt said. "I can't believe the trouble you guys went through!"

Ann was certainly impressed. "All I can look at is the bare chest," she said. And while Al (who has his own self-portrait) was hoping the painting would be on velvet cloth, Savannah made a good point to Matt: "This can replace that one you have of yourself already!"

The video is part of a new Old Spice campaign, where the Old Spice Guy becomes the Old Spice Manta Claus, giving out 7 billion gifts in a series of videos. Check it out here.

Watch the video of Isaiah presenting Matt with the painting above! And relive Matt's homage to the Old Spice commercials in the clip below.

Who do you think did it better: Matt or the Old Spice Guy? Vote in our poll here. (And sorry, Matt: So far 60 percent of our viewers sided with Isaiah.)

    TODAY

Isaiah also stopped by Kathie Lee and Hoda's show offering them some presents as well.

"I wanted to celebrate your beauty," he said as he handed them mirrors.

Kathie Lee looked shocked when she looked into it. "That's just what you want when you're 58," Kathie Lee joked.

Check out the video below, which includes Isaiah offering Kathie Lee and Hoda's cameraman a special something as well:

Isaiah surprising our anchors was really fun! But he was a bit of a difficult guest backstage. Just check out his amusing tweet here:

Still, the Old Spice Guy's attention was all worth it for Matt, who became "officially famous" because of it (though that might make doing those lava-chugging charity fun runs a bit more difficult what with the paparazzi and all).

Producer's notebook: How I made it snow in Barbados

Me, writing the cue cards for Matt's Old Spice intro.

    By Jennifer Long, TODAY Producer

"I'm sorry you want to bring WHAT on the plane?"

"Snow," I sheepishly replied to the Jet Blue check-in desk as I pointed to a sketchy looking taped-up box that said "SnoBiz" on the side.

Production manager Grace Yavana with that sketchy box of snow.

And there began my adventure of making it snow in Barbados.

About a month ago I went to Matt's office to get a sense of what he would like to do for the last day of Where in the World. We knew we'd be on a beach in Barbados ... and we'd had plenty of beach "reveals" in Where in the Worlds past. How could we make this one different?

I suggested constructing a clear platform on the surface of the water to make it look like he was walking on water. You know, like Jesus-style. I'm not sure if he actually didn't hear me or chose not to acknowledge this ... I'm guessing the latter... but all of a sudden he bounced up and said, "What if we did a take on that Old Spice Body Wash commercial??"

Co-producer Krista Brunson transporting Matt's "costumes" to Barbados.

    YES!!!

There began figuring out how to do on a beach in Barbados what Old Spice did so brilliantly in a high-tech Hollywood sound stage. Another challenge: we had to do it live. I had knots in my stomach.

After meetings and scripting and set designing and wardrobe constructing ... I was now standing at the Jet Blue terminal with a box of snow.

OK so the snow didn't make it to Barbados ... at least on that Jet Blue flight. Something about the packaging (apparently Scotch tape isn't an acceptable form of packaging on international flights). FedEx to the rescue.

Shockingly, the snow was the easiest part. A few days ago I looked down at my ringing Blackberry ....and let me tell you ... seeing "Matt Lauer calling" is still a little jarring even to me!

"Hey, so why aren't I ending on a horse like the real commercial does?" Matt asks.

Me: "Cause you're a germ freak ... I never thought you would get on one."

Cut to me at a Barbadian horse farm at 8 am the next morning.

    That's me, on Matt's horse.

I know you have heard Matt say it a thousand times, but our technical crew is the best in the business. For 3 straight days they have been tinkering with the backdrops and camera blocking and lighting to pull off Matt's Old Spice reveal. And it's hot out. VERY HOT.

Our crew really is the best in the business. Here's cameramen Callan Griffiths and Bob Riggio hanging the fake "Canadian Rockies" backdrop.

I'm writing this the night before the big show...Matt is set to arrive to Barbados in just a few more hours.

We just finished our final rehearsals and it's looking pretty great ... we hope it will make people smile.

I do know we made one person smile already. I just looked over and saw one of our local Barbadian crew members staring at our box of snow. I grabbed a bunch of it and handed it to him and said, "dont worry its biodegradable!"

One of our Barbados crew members, holding snow for the first time!

He smiled and said, "Oh it's not that. I've just never held snow before. You made it snow in Barbados!"

Miss a moment? Here's a complete recap of Matt's trip

    What a week!

Matt journeyed about 30,000 miles spanning four continents. He traveled via plane, horse, inflatable raft, ATV, skiis, helicopter, train and rickshaw.

He tried exotic foods like stinky fruit and grub — thanks to Bear Grylls — and topped it all off with a monkey cocktail on a beach in Barbados. (And speaking of monkeys, they really seemed to be a recurring theme this week).

Day 1: Skeleton Coast of Africa, Namibia
Matt started the first day of his 10th Where in the World trip with a little "spring skiing" down one of Namibia's many immense sand dunes. The images were spectacular.

Matt toured the coast, and also learned more about the region's wildlife (including cheetahs and desert elephants) and about Namibia's ancient tribe. Savannah Guthrie also tried out some of the extreme sports that Namibia is becoming known for.

    Day 2: Madrid, Spain
Matt traveled to the historic Plaza Mayor in Madrid, Spain, for the second day of his trip. The square is hundreds of years old and hosts concerts and festivals.

Matt started the day with a little flamenco dancing and later took viewers inside the public food market known as the Mercado de San Miguel as well as the royal palace that is home to the colorful 85-year-old Duchess of Alba.

    Day 3: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Matt opened the third day of his adventure from more than 500 feet in the air, standing in the middle of the sky bridge connecting the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur, known to locals as KL, is known for its diverse population, trademark tea time ritual and culinary delights.

    Day 4: Jungfraujoch, Swiss Alps
Matt went to Jungfraujoch, Switzerland, for the fourth day of his worldwide adventure. Known as the 'Top of Europe,' Jungfraujoch rises more than 11,000 feet above sea level.

Matt met a record-breaking mountain climber, who took only three hours to scale the Eiger, an ascent that takes most three days. He also took a lesson in wilderness survival (including how to eat a grub!) from Bear Grylls, host of "Man vs. Wild."

He was joined by celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis to partake in a local dance — despite Matt claiming a convenient skiing accident from Jungfraujoch. He also sipped the local delicacy, a monkey cocktail!

Matt basks in the Barbados sun to end Where in the World trip

Matt held a party of epic proportions in Barbados this morning to close out his week-long, global journey around the world.

To reveal the location, Matt did a hilarious take on the famed Old Spice commercials. Hint: Matt ended up on a horse. Watch it here!

"Clearly Matt is losing it," Ann joked as the three anchors laughed at Matt's reveal. "Best one yet," they agreed.

Blog: Producer tells how she made it snow in Barbados

As for Barbados, who can blame Matt for kicking back on the beach for a bit?

He's traveled almost 30,000 miles over four continents. Matt deserves a bit of R&R, and that's just what he's getting at the stunning Sandy Lane Resort.

Blog: Matt explains the 2 clues he gave for Barbados

About a quarter of a million people live on this island, which is part of the Lesser Antilles. The locals have a great expression: "Life didn't begin on Barbados, but it was perfected here."

For 70 miles, the beaches that ring this tropical island make up some of the best views in the world.

Blog: How'd Matt get to Barbados? Find out here

    TODAY

But you're missing out if you just stay on the sand. Jump into the water (a balmy 80 degrees Fahrenheit) and swim with sea turtles or surf in paradise.

Simon Cowell, the Beckhams and Oprah Winfrey are just some of the celebrities who vacation at the island's exclusive resorts.

Slideshow: See the other locations Matt's visited on his 10 trips

Matt was joined this morning by Giada De Laurentiis, who helped the pair learn about calypso music and festivals. Locals wear colorful costumes and dress up as characters called "Shaggy Bear" and "Mother Sally."

Musician Alison Hinds also taught Matt and Giada a few dance moves, even though Matt tried to get out of it with a convenient "snowshoeing accident" excuse from his trip to Switzerland's Jungfraujoch.

It's an island of religion and rum: There are 365 churches and 1,600 rum shops in the country.

TODAY Travel Guide: Tropical island offers relaxation, rum

Giada also put her cooking skills to good use by showing Matt how to make some local delicacies, like a monkey cocktail! Watch the video below.

What else happened this morning? Local calypsonian Mighty Gabby serenaded Matt, who Gabby called "master of the TV," with a song he wrote specifically for our global traveler.

Travel expert Nilou Motamed also spotlighted the best places to stay and see when visiting the beautiful island.

And with a few more gifts for our anchors and a little fun in the water at Giada's expense (watch the hilarious video here), Matt finished up his 10th Where in the World journey in paradise.

I loved the reveal too but was disappointed it wasn't a more epic location for the final day! And surprised they did nothing to honor our Veterans. After yesterday I know it's hard to top but I had hoped for a more amazing final day. But I still love it all!

    Natalie's clue-solving strategy? Googling

    TODAY

    By Amy DiLuna

Natalie has been a Where in the World clue-guessing rock star this week.

And today she revealed a secret strategy, like for how she almost correctly guessed Matt was in the Alps today. She gets by with a little help from Google. (Read Matt's clue here).

"I heard the 'James Bond' music," playing in the studio, she admitted on the show this morning, and that got her thinking: Where have the "Bond" movies taken place?

Here's her story behind the sleuthing:

"I heard them playing James Bond music as I was doing 'TODAY in 2,'" Natalie told us. "So of course, I went on Google and searched for train scenes. I remembered a James Bond scene with the trains through the mountains and Switzerland came up for multiple locations in James Bond movies."

Pretty smart, if you ask us. You need every advantage possible when trying to decode Matt's clues.

"So I was mostly right with my Swiss Alps guess," she said. "Anyway, I'm spending way too much time trying to figure out the clues."

We disagree (there's no such thing as too much time! The TODAY.com team has spent many hours trying to work out these clues) but we especially loved Natalie's breaking down of the very difficult Madrid clue on Tuesday.

Natalie insists she was right; it was Matt who was in the wrong location.

"I still say my guess made more sense given the clue," Natalie joked. "It should have been Andorra and not Madrid. Andorra is the highest point on the Iberian Peninsula, is known for its World Cup skiing as well as a stage of the Tour de France, and is free, politically, as a principality between Spain and France, and it's known for its duty free shopping too ... so there!! Bitter, party of one.  Yes, I am."

What's your clue solving strategy? And have you been right during the week? Let us know in the comments below.

Where in the world is Matt? Standing on 'top of Europe'

High and mighty, vast and timeless: Matt stood on the "top of Europe" to kick off the fourth day of Where in the World.

The anchor was 11,745 feet above sea level at Jungfraujoch’s Sphinx Observatory, located in the Swiss Alps.

    TODAY

Did you guess correctly? Natalie did! Read an explanation of Matt's two clues.

The mountains are home to snowy peaks and lush valleys. Towns accessible only by cable car dot the landscape.

It's a popular tourist destination: 700,000 visitors come every year (with many likely leaving with their jaw on the ground).

Slideshow: See the other locations Matt's visited on his 10 trips

You can get there by taking a train, like Matt did. It's the highest railway station in Europe. (Watch a video of the spectacular trip here.)

But some people mountain climb to get there! Matt profiled a group of climbers, one of whom scaled the Eiger, Europe’s most dangerous mountain, in 2 hours and 45 minutes! Meet the guy who climbed it that quickly in the video below.

The Where in the World team was supposed to arrive in Jungfrau on Tuesday, but poor weather changed the team's plans.

Video: View the 'whiteout' storm that scrambled Matt's plans

How would one survive in these horrible conditions? Matt was joined by survival expert Bear Grylls who showed Matt how to create a snow cave for shelter and how to find food: grub, which Matt ate live on the show.

Thankfully, this morning was beautiful: 23 degrees Fahrenheit with a sun so intense that Matt didn't need a coat.

And of course there's more to eat up there than insects. When most Americans think Swiss delicacies, they think cheese.

But NBC's Kerry Sanders, who joined Matt on top of the mountain, reveals that while Swiss locals are borderline obsessed with the dairy product, there's no such thing as what Americans call Swiss cheese. Watch his report.

Matt was also joined at the top by yodelers and a Swiss "model": a St. Bernard named Asti. Check out the lovable pooch below:

Jungfraujoch Observatory is most famous for being the breathtaking setting for the 1969 James Bond film, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

And Bond would be proud of how Jungfraujoch has evolved over the last few years. From the zipline to paragliding, mountain biking to sipping stiff drinks in an ice palace, visitors can definitely follow in the footsteps of Agent 007.

TODAY Travel Guide: See these amazing views in person

Watch a video of Kerry performing some intense stunts in the Swiss Alps below.

Before Matt left Switzerland, Matt bestowed his co-anchors with gifts and revealed a clue about his final destination.

It's so much fun to watch where Matt is these days. I should be recording it. One thing that is very annoying however, are the boxes that are up in front of the tv scene! It is so annoying because you can't always see everything you want to see. Please! Please! Get those boxes off the screen!

Track Matt's Where in the World journey (30,000 miles so far!)

Matt has already traveled about 30,000 miles spanning four continents on his 10th anniversary Where in the World trip. And he's still got to get back to studio 1A!

Check out his complete journey below:

    TODAY

    Day 1: Skeleton Coast, Namibia
Matt left studio 1A Friday night to start his long journey to the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, Africa.

The crew first flew about 3,800 miles to Dakar, Senegal. They carried on another 3,400 miles to Walvis Bay, Namibia. The total flight took 16 hours.

Matt opened the 7 a.m. ET broadcast skiing down a sand dune. The local time was 2 p.m.

Total miles traveled from NYC: 7,195
Total miles traveled so far on trip: 7,195

    TODAY

    Day 2: Madrid, Spain
Matt took a nine hour, non-stop flight from Namibia to Madrid, Spain. It was about 4,500 miles.

Spain's time zone is six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. It was 1 p.m. there when the TODAY broadcast started at 7 a.m. ET.

Weather concerns at the original Day 2 destination scrambled the team's itinerary, sending Matt to Madrid. The flight crew "was really nice," Matt said, joking that "they waived the $50 change fee for us, which saved NBC a fortune."

Total miles traveled from Namibia: 4,536
Total miles traveled so far on trip: 11,731

    TODAY

    Day 3: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Matt jumped in a plane in Madrid and flew 7.5 hours and more than 3,500 miles to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where they stopped to fuel up.

Matt and the crew flew another 7.5 hours and 3,400 miles to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He landed about 4 hours before the 7 a.m. TODAY broadcast; it was 8 p.m. in Malaysia.

Total miles traveled from Madrid to Kuala Lumpur: 6,950
Total miles traveled so far on trip: 18,681

    TODAY

    Day 4: Jungfraujoch, Swiss Alps
Matt was originally supposed to arrive in the Jungfraujoch for Day 2 of his trip. But poor weather conditions – a snowstorm that created "whiteout" conditions – shook up the itinerary.

Matt left Kuala Lumpur Wednesday night for a seven hour flight to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where the crew stopped for some fuel. They continued on their way for another seven hour flight to Zurich, Switzerland.

From there, they took a helicopter ride, which took an hour, into the Swiss Alps. They then took a two hour, high-altitude train ride to the top of Jungfraujoch. They arrived just in time for their 7 a.m. ET broadcast, which was 1:30 p.m. local time.

So far, Matt and the Where in the World crew have spent more than 50 hours in planes, trains and helicopters.

Total miles traveled from Kuala Lumpur: 6,489
Total miles traveled so far: 25,170

    TODAY

    Day 5: Barbados
Matt left the "top of Europe" after the show by taking two helicopters -- one down to a valley below Jungfraujoch and another from there to Zurich.

At Zurich, they jumped on a plane and flew about 2,000 miles to Santa Maria, Portugal. After fueling up, the crew flew to Barbados, landing around 1 a.m. The 7 a.m. ET TODAY broadcast is 8 a.m. local time.

Total miles traveled from Madrid to Kuala Lumpur: 4,608
Total miles traveled so far on trip: 29,778
